.AVA files require Photoshop?

this is actually a site related discussion and I did create a thread in there about it...but nobody goes in there so...here I am.

anyway...

long story short, I can't see avatars on prince.org. Properties on an avatar here tell me they are .ava files which are Adobe Photoshop files, I don't have Adobe photo shop, but I can't be the ONLY one with out photoshop...can I? Searching for alternative programs to open .ava have gone nowhere.

can anybody provide me with advice on how or what application to use so I can see avatars again?

thanx in advance.

Do you mean that you can't see them in the threads? Can you see your own?

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Or are you trying to opening them on your computer? I ask because that's the only way the I get the box asking to open ava files with Photoshop.

no, just viewing threads and such...all the avatars are just a box with the word avatar in them. I can not even see my own.

there are a few things you should try first. First, I would suggest DUMPING IE. It's a shit browser. Start using firefox or chrome.

if the avatars still don't show up in firefox or chrome, it's your OS. How long has it been happening? If it's been a fairly short amount of time, check when your OS last updated and maybe roll back to restore point.

Also try updating your Java. There may be a file association error coming from the registry.

ok...I'm running IE 8 (the highest available for XP which I have)

I just updatd my java to the latest version...still no luck.

ugh...I know people say IE is shit but I like it...other than this...it's like an old comfy blanket. I don't wanna try Chrome. sad but I guess I will have to try.

thanx you both for your help so far. keep the ideas coming please

I'd try doing a system restore like JerseyKRS suggested. Try thinking of the day that you last remember seeing avatars and restore your system to the day before that.

well....it's been like this for almost 2 years now...AND it's a work computer so I will not be restoring anything.

I'm using chrome right now and it's STILL not letting me see avatars.

Photoshop in itself has nothing to do with it, it seems you have a file deleted or out of date for previewing an image.Left click on the avitar and apply a default process for opening...such as photoshop or your system previewer....

You may need to run this program, it will detect unwanted files plus has diagnostic tests to possible rectify your problem ... http://download.cnet.com/...ntent;main

left clicking on an avatar does nothing....at all. right clicking doesn't give me an option for setting a default proccess.
