My breasts were bigger when I was 11 than how they are today and I never ever wore bras until my mid 30s. I don't think bras would have helped to stop men staring at me anyway. And I mostly felt uncomfortable because other girls my age didn't have breasts yet and because I still was a child and wanted to look like one and not because of men. That was my point. Like it or not, girls are developing a lot earlier than they used to. As I stated, I was a B cup by age 11 and a C by high school. (And it didn't stop there.
A bit of padding does not do THAT much to add to size, it's more in the shape of the bra - if it's a push-up, etc.
Yeah, we'll have to agree to disagree, XxAxX.

is there anyone on this thread who thinks it is appropriate to market 'sexy' underwear to juniors (i.e. thongs, padded bras), to girls who are not fully physically developed?
is there anyone here who thinks it is culturally appropriate to sexualize young girls in this way?
yes or no, please. i am truly curious to know how my peers feel about this issue

^ i am not looking for personal stories, such as how big your girls were at a given age. just a yes or no to the issue of sexualizing little girls by marketing 'racy' undergarments to their age group
am i this out of touch edit [Edited 2/21/11 10:35am]

I don't consider a padded bra sexy. I don't see anything sexy about the bra in the link you posted.
Thongs are bad for girls, yes.

I don't think very young girls should wear heels. But then again I had a short phase when I loved to wear them when I was maybe 11. About underwear: girls who don't have breasts at an age when other girls do are often really unhappy. What age are we talking about? we're talking pre-pubescent, before puberty when a 'little girl' has no chest.
god. this is weird | |

I don't think that an 8 or 10 year old girl should wear a bra. And I doubt girls of that age do, but maybe I am wrong and naive. I agree that sexualizing little girls is wrong. What I don’t agree with is that a plain, black, padded bra made for “juniors” is sexualizing little girls.
And by bringing up my experience, my point was that sometimes little girls have big breasts already. Like it or not. And they have to deal with them. Some 11 year olds have to shop in women’s sizes, the old training bras they used to market to pre-teens simply don’t fit them. And “juniors” clothing is generally marketed to 13-21 year olds. That’s a wide age range.
That’s all. |

"Juniors" clothing is not for little kids.
It's for older teens and young adults.
Juniors sizing is adult sizing (2/4/6/8); little 10 and 11 y/o kids wouldn't be able to fit into any of it.
Just wanted to clarify that point.

so i got an email from a friend from high school as we are all turning 30 around now
stop shopping in the junior's dept. i ain't switching to mom jeans! misses pants and just cut ugly and unflaterring. yes my mom is gonna be 60 but she's still got the figure she had as a teen and she's skinny as hell!

The alternative to not dressing like you're chasing youth doesn't have to be ill fitting clothing or even mom jeans. Open any fashion magazine. There's plenty of fun, sexy, quirky, even edgy fashion out there for just about any age.

I'm turning 30 in August.
I guess it is about time for me to leave the junior's section *looks down at my Tinkerbell t-shirt*.
But, PurpleMookie has a point - most adult women's clothes, are really bland and cut weird. Sometimes there's nicer stuff available, but those are usually at stores that are way out of my price range.
To be fair to myself though, I don't really look that odd in junior clothing. I look younger than I actually am and I'm small, so I manage to get away with it. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

at what point will you give up on life? i'm guessing it will be after you have to clean and do laundry for some moron and your children for a few years... everyone's a fruit & nut case

I wore this today to do some shopping. I'm pretty sure that a good chunk of my wardrobe is "junior" clothes and I'm turning 37 in a couple of months.

it's like Miss Shop or Hot Options in K-Mart and Myer. I still shop there too, because, basically, the choices out there for my age are pretty fuckin dismal

oh yeah, and at $400 a piece, forget it!
The problem with MOMS is their limited budget - MOMS kind of tend to come last on the food chain, especially stay at home ones. Clothes are more expensive than the main income earners even realise, so "oh this old thing? I've had that for ages!" comes up often.
I tend to shop at K-Mart (and ours is wayyyyyy different to yours, it's nicer than your Walmart in range and quality, more like Target) Target, Sussan and Esprit (which is expensive) and if you can't afford to shop somewhere else, you're fucked
The shops aimed at my age are: Katies, Millers, Suzanne Grae (still relatively low-priced, but

I completely agree. I'm suggesting fashion mags for inspiration and tips, not to literally go out and get that stuff. Very few folk can actually do that.
It is possible. | |

if parent's would not buy the said undergarments, there would be no market for them. blame the parents dear, not the stores.

Again, much like in the ponytails thread...you are the exception. You know what you're doing and how to pull a sexy (not desperate) look together. A lot of folk do not.
There's a lot of wrinkly chicks runnin round in much too low tiny tops and stretchy pink pants with shit written across their saggy asses.
