Tyler Perry is perhaps best known for his "Madea" movies, in which he inhabits the role of an overweight and overly aggressive elderly woman with varying degrees of hilarity. But for his next role, Perry is more likely to hunt down the kinds of deranged men who routinely dress up as overweight and overly aggressive elderly women.
According to Deadline, QED has packaged an adaptation of the James Patterson novel "I, Alex Cross" with Perry attached to the title role and Rob Cohen directing.
In signing up for the film, Perry takes over the franchise role of D.C.-based detective and psychologist Alex Cross from Morgan Freeman, who already played the character in two films, "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider."
"I, Alex Cross" is currently out to distributors, and Deadline reports that Paramount, already responsible for the aforementioned Patterson adaptations, "is interested in taking the project off the table." But they also rightly point out that Lionsgate, the home of Perry's many successful movies, might have an interest as well. We'll see how it shakes out.
Now, there's a question you might be asking yourselves in the midst of this "Alex Cross" news: what the heck happened to Idris Elba? The British actor, perhaps best known for playing manipulative drug lieutenant Stringer Bell on "The Wire," was attached to an adaptation of "Cross" as recently as last summer with director David Twohy on board as well.
No disrespect intended towards Perry, but I would have loved to see Elba's take on the fictional detective. It seems like that adaptation is dead in the water, which isn't the end of the world — Elba has plenty of other future projects to look forward to including this summer's "Thor" — and I'm certainly interested in seeing Perry's take, even if he isn't my first choice for the role.
