So all of a sudden, I'm Lactose Intolerant!

eek - I'm in my early 40's, I've drank milk all my life like it was water, I adore Ice Cream, and what is a burger without cheese as well as a plethora of other dishes that contain cheese.

For a couple of years I've been battling sporadic abdominal cramps and severe headaches that would wake me up at night. They didn't happen all the time. I love sharing cookies and milk or Ice Cream with the kids after dinner. Not thinking it was dairy related, I went to the doc for a series of tests, and there you have it.

It's been a month without any dairy products and I feel like a new person. OMG! eek

Getting older is a BITCH! mad

i drink my shake and go to sleep.

everything is right in the world.

i was 45 at the time.

i woke with a gurggle in my stomache.

it has been all down hill sence then.

no klondike bars

no ice-cream

no shakes

no milk with dinner

no cold cereal...

It's a pain. though I can eat small doses of dairy cautiously, it's not an every day thing and never straight milk. Rice and Almond milk work better for me.

That scares me. My parents were both lactose intolerant and I am the only one of my siblings who can consume dairy. I love it, but I've heard developing lactose intolerance in middle adulthood is common. confused

Yeah, I was told its common, especially for someone my age. mad I have to change my entire diet, and be aware of all foods that may contain dairy. It's going to suck, but I like the way I feel. cool

Are you a girl?

You could be pregnant.

I was watching one of those I had a baby in the toilet and never knew I was pregnant on TLC the other day. And the one girl, the only symptom she had was adverse reaction to daisry products. nod

I'd get an ultrasound if I were you!

Yes BD, that's about the age lactose intol. kicked in on me. Milk was my absolute favorite drink. I wondered if I became intolerant because I drank glasses of it so freely, daily. I quit fairly easily with the sub of almond and rice, however, I still must have a wee drop in my morning coffee. I've tried every non dairy product out there for coffee, nothing cuts it. The rest of the time it's almond or rice. Be careful with the soya....too many toxic soya products out there these days. For a long time, I also suspected I was gluten/wheat intolerant too, but because of so many foods that contained it, I put up with it - unitl I couldn't hide the fact that I looked 5 months pregnant. Fairly lean, but always had a pot belly. Quit wheat and gluten and belly deflates. I found it much harder to quit, given that both are in soooo many yummy products. One thing I really enjoy for breakfast now is a bowl of hot Quinoa with raisins, walnuts, flax seed....and of course almond milk. mmmmm

I've been lactose intolerant for about 20 years now but was recently diagnosed with Gluten/Wheat sensitivity, which really sucks! It's very difficult trying to find products that don't contain wheat or flour. And the products that are specifically made Gluten Free cost an arm and a leg! It's been hard but I've managed to cut about 50% of the wheat/flour out of my diet.

Well, I'm not totally gluten-free. I'm doing this gradually because I know the withdrawal symptoms are awful! Yes, I am starting to lose a little weight. Once I cut the flour/wheat out completely, hopefully, I will lose more weight and I will start to feel better.

My sister is Gluten/Wheat intolerant and I feel so sorry for her, it seems to be in literally everything, even stuff you wouldnt think it would be like Glace Cherries and Soy Sauce. Its even worse when we are going out to a restaurant for a meal or something because alot of them arent prepared for people with intolerances (except for nuts).

That happened to me as well gradually in recent years. I've been expecting it since my mom became lactose intolerant after she had me. I don't have any children, but I figured it was going to hit me at some point. My first clue, that I completely ignored was about 3.5 years ago when I would eat low fat cream cheese on bagels. An hour later, my stomach would make alot of noise, and I'm telling it to "shut up, I just fed you." lol Two years ago, I ate cold cereal, and yeah it was downhill for me hours later, and I just assumed it was due to the milk being one day old. Well it didn't smell or anything so I thought it was fine. shrug

Just had to face and accept that I became one. So I dropped milk, ice cream, cream cheese, and sour cream. I still eat cheese like it's going out of style, but now I'm taking Lactaid pills, vanilla flavored. I've eaten Soy Dream frozen dessert and that's pretty good. Lately, I've been using Trader Joe's Soy Milk in oatmeal and it has a nice sweetness to it. It's been crazy because I also have GERD, which was another diet switch for me for the last three years, and I'm just a picky eater. Food is not as fun to eat as it used to be years ago. sad
