Holy crap! Katrina-sized cyclone set to hit Queensland, Australia

Here I am stuck at home due to a massive blizzard, and at the same time Cyclone Yasi is about to make landfall in Queensland, Australia, which has already been ravaged earlier by huge floods.

http://www.brisbanetimes....1acgp.html

Yasi is the biggest hurricane/typhoon/cyclone expected to hit land since Huricane Katrina hit just outside of New Orleans on August 29, 2005. It is packing sustained winds of 295 km/hr (~175 mph) near the eye wall and is expected to reach landfall with a storm surge of 7 meters (~22 feet).

omg omfg boxed typing

ZK lives in Melbourne, Victoria. It's probably about 2000 kms away or more from the cyclone area. I doubt she's on holiday up in North Queensland because they've been talking about this cyclone coming for more than a week. Victoria has been going through bad flooding but I believe it's more regional. They're also moving into extreme heat, so forest fires are probably on the horizon for Victoria (and are currently happening, I think in Western Australia.) I swear, this countries weather is no joke!

I live on the Gold Coast in South East Queensland and apart from the ocean swell being quite heavy, we've been unaffected. Thoughts and prayers with people up near Cairns and Townsville. No reports of deaths and injuries at this stage.

I got taken on a surprise anniversary trip to Cairns/Port Douglas/Cape Trib last November eek

But no, I'm like 20 hours drive from the worst flooding

(although the flooding in my own state has been pretty bad too - from the air on a flight from Mildura, I was watching the ground the whole way home and the ground was sparkling from all the water)

I'm 35 hours drive from the cyclone.

My parents live in East Gippsland and that's on fire at the moment. This is 4 hours from me.

this photo was taken by my primary school friend taking a beach holiday, but they can't return home at the moment, since the fire is blocking the highway!

Newcastle has a tiny fault line. lol

News update.....it's looking good. Two missing (so far). No dead (so far). People heeded the warning and bunkered down, most got out. Thousands and thousands have lost their homes, though. Some of these poor bastards only got hit by cyclone Larry five years ago!!!!

If anyone is trying to reach people don't worry, most communications are still out but the SES looks like it's done a fantastic job warning everyone in time.

Well done to Queenlanders.

ZK, enjoy your fires disbelief ours will probably hit soon. We've been 35C all bloody week! It's dry as a desert up here at the moment.
