Its a common mistake I myself made... hey, ya live and ya learn.
Hey... maybe the friends don't have to be girls? Or do what I do... take yourself out and just enjoy, or take up hobbies like a dance class or bowling. You'll meet some ineresting new folks that way.
I would recommend going solo to the movies, but that's a great way to bring home bedbugs now. :heebeegeebees:

Is there truth to this? I go solo to the movies fairly often.

I used to always go see a movie if my BF went to the football. I didn't care about going alone

you are putting yourself through a great deal of unecessary suffering imo.
i hope you can work things out but this guy doesn't sound like he is all that into you. you can do a lot better for yourself. it might take time but hang in there for the guy who cares about you and doesn't keep you guessing and feeling uneasy all the time. you deserve that. Dude!! You didn't know? OMG, I am glad I said that then.. big stories were breaking out last summer on that.
here's one of several articles...

I (like you and zombie) loved going to the movies alone... until this mess. NETFLIX! [Edited 2/5/11 7:27am]

I am SO with you, on all counts, lol. Haven't been to a movie theater in over a year (since Avatar in IMAX 3D), because I ain't TRYING to bring no bedbugs home! Besides, for more than a year now I get all my movies off the Internet - BEFORE NETFLIX, and several weeks before the DVD even drops.
Besides, going to the movies these days, even alone; you're not getting out of there without spending a minimum of $20-$25 (...not here in NYC anyway).

Where I live its expensive too... especially in 3D.
... all that money and they can't keep seats bug free? I'm saving my money!

...and now, EVERY new movie is coming out in 3D! Talk about OVERKILL, sheesh! Guess they figure it's a good way to charge $18 for a damned movie ticket (...hold the soda & popcorn, dayum).

I think the industry is doing it purposefully so that they can jack up regular admission.
No one would really notice or complain.
:threadjack: Because Cinnamongal is all set...

I think that's exactly what they're doing. Though I will admit, Avatar in IMAX 3D was amazing, and the experience was worth the higher ticket price. But now they're overdoing it. Soon they're gonna have romantic comedies coming out in 3D, lol. After a while it's like... why?
...yeah, I noticed we just sorta jacked this thread, lol. Sorry Cinnamongal; though we've all hit you pretty hard with our opinions and advice, lol.

Where do you go in NYC that you pay that much for movies? I live in Queens and pay $7 at my local cinema.

Certainly there are less expensive movie theaters in the NY area, but I'm a glutton for punishment, and like to go for the "full" experience... I usually go to the theaters in Times Square on the opening weekend of the movies release. That way, I'm more likely to experience the movie in a packed theater with others that are just as hyped-up to see the movie as I am. I like to hear a young enthusiastic crowd scream together at the scary parts, and laugh together at the funny parts, lol. It's part of what I remember about a movie even years later when I watch it again at home. I don't even mind the occasional crowd outburst at the screen... "YOU IDIOT! DON'T GO IN THE BASEMENT!!!", lol.
Plus, another trippy aspect about seeing movies in Manhattan, there's often some scene in the actual movie that is taking place right outside, or within a few blocks, of the theater I happen to be watching the movie in, lol (...although I'm sure that happens in Queens as well). When I was in Los Angeles, I used to watch movies in the theaters on Hollywood Blvd to get the same effect, lol.
As I remember, "Avatar" in IMAX 3D, in Times Square, was going for $18 a ticket. Throw in $5 for nachos and a $3 soda, and the movie-going experience goes well over twenty bucks. But even non-3D movies (last time I went) in the city were around $12 (,,,again, throw in that snack and you're back at $20 bucks!). Plus, going to the newer theaters in Times Square used to be some reassurance that you wouldn't be sitting in some dark theater with a bunch of critters running around, like in some of the outer boroughs (which of course is no longer the case - cue the remote control, lol).
If I had common sense, I'd use my Optimum discount card, go to the Clearview Cinema on 23rd St. on Wednesday or Thursday (...I think) for the matinee, and I'd get in for free! But like I mentioned earlier, unless it's a big Summer blockbuster or something, I'll usually just pull the movie off the net for free, and watch it in the comfort of my "bedbug-free" 5.1 surround sound home theater (with treats galore, lol).

why do you want to keep someone in your life, when he treats you the way that you don't want to be treated, nor the way you deserve to be treated...? let's talk about your self image

We're obviously very different people. I never understood the need to eat during a movie. The sound of myself chewing distracts me from watching the film.
Most of the movies shown at my theater are art films so it's thankfully not full of teenagers yelling at the screen. These movies also draw a smaller crowd--I'm used to seeing a movie there with ten other people or less in attendance. Once last year I saw a movie there and I was the only person in the room. That was great. I thought having to deal with others was the main reason why people don't go to the cinema anymore, but you apparently like that experience. Fair enough.
You're right about cinema prices in Manhattan being higher than the outer boroughs though. That's why I avoid seeing films there as much as possible.
Anyway, my point was it's very possible to see a movie in NY for less than the $20 minimum like you originally said. You just have to know where and when to go.

I can certainly understand the appeal of enjoying a good art film in peace and solitude. I used to do a fair amount of that at the Angelika Film Center on Houston St. downtown.
