Henry Cavill has been chosen to play Superman in Zack Snyder's upcoming Man of Steel reboot.

The 27-year-old British actor has starred in TV series The Tudors and movies The Count Of Monte Cristo, Stardust and Whatever Works.

Director Zack Snyder said of Cavill's casting: "In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognised and revered character of all time, and I am honoured to be a part of his return to the big screen.

"I also join Warner Bros, Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Snyder's untitled Superman movie, to be produced by Christopher Nolan, will open in cinemas worldwide in December 2012.

Cavill can next be seen in Immortals and thriller The Cold Light Of Day.

He's hot and was great in The Tudors, but the Superman franchise has never interested me in the least. meh.

Nice. He's a good actor and unbelievably smokin' hot. We need a sexy Superman.

And I hope the reboot completely ignores all five of the crappy Superman films that have come before it.

george reeve, the tv superman jumped or was pushed out of a window...dean cain can't get a decent gig...i know there's a website that explains it..

People have thrown Margot Kidder and some of the actors from the original Superman film in there as well.

But Dean Cain probably can't get a decent gig because he's not a very good actor and he doesn't look like that anymore. Tom Welling doesn't have a whole lot of range either, so he's probably not going to have a big career. The guy from the recent movie is on Chuck now, though, so he's doing okay.

Since when does Superman have a scruffy beard?
