1. Who is your favorite pop artist?

I'm assuming Current: Several, I suppose. I never know what exactly is considered Pop and what branches out from that anymore. I just hear stuff I like and buy it. If Robyn is considered Pop (electonica? shrug) I say her. I love Adele. I do like Gaga very much also. I know she's Pop for sure. lol

2. When you hear a song, do you focus more on the music or the vocals?

Depends. If the voice is forgettable, then definitely the music.

I love vocals , but you can have amazing vocals with a shitty song, and that goes nowhere.

3. Do you think there is more room in the pop music scene for a female or a male artist?

There's always room. Maybe more for a male, because there's so many pop "divas" (term used loosely) out there? shrug

4. Who is your least favorite pop artist?

Justin fuckin Beiber (sp?) ill

5. What is your favorite pop song and why?

Of the past year or so, probably Dancing On My Own or pretty much anything from the Body Talk albums.

Because they all feel/sound fresh to me.

6. What is your opinion on autotune?

If used creatively or in moderation and not as crutch, I don't mind it so much.

7. Would you rather buy a physical CD or download from the internet?

More and more, download. I love buying the physical, but the romance wears off when I start running out of storage.

8. Are there any current trends in pop music that you like?

Can't think of specific ones at the moment.

9. Are there any current trends in pop music that you dislike?

The whole repetition thing (I've no idea if it has a name) that seemed to catch on with Umbrella-ella-ella and still goin strong Halo-halo-halo. It's been cute for a minute but has run its course for me.

10. What do you think is a reasonable price for a single song?

$1- $1.50 shrug I never download single songs. Always the whole album/ep.

11. What do you think is a reasonable price for a full album?

$10-$15 (bit more if a double album of course)

You're welcome. I would've posted sooner but I actually had to think about it.

I guess it made me realize that I don't listen to nearly as much current Pop as I think I do. More Jazz/Funk/R&B...I guess.

OH, Sam Sparro, is he considered Pop? If so, I'd put him up there as a favorite.

I'm trying to get as many demographics answering this as I possibly can. I'm producing a pop album for my next project and everyone's opinions are very helpful.

Pop Music Opinion Survey

1. Who is your favorite pop artist?

Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna are my favourites ever, but I like old and new pop music

2. When you hear a song, do you focus more on the music or the vocals?

The voice is important to me, but it's so unfortunate if a good song is given to a bad vocalist

3. Do you think there is more room in the pop music scene for a female or a male artist?

males have it easier and less pressure than women when it comes to sexism and ageism

4. Who is your least favorite pop artist?

miley cyrus, justin beiber, don't care for them

5. What is your favorite pop song and why?

perhaps billie jean...I'm tired

6. What is your opinion on autotune?

if it's used creatively, it's fine, but I can't stand it in general

7. Would you rather buy a physical CD or download from the internet?

I like physical CD's for artists I love best, but now I'm turning to itunes more and donwloading.

8. Are there any current trends in pop music that you like?

I want to see diversity continue to grow and I have seen some of that happening

9. Are there any current trends in pop music that you dislike?

too much sex, too many songs sound the same with the same style, too much autotune...kesha

10. What do you think is a reasonable price for a single song?

I used to buy singles if I really liked the artist or song (but not the album)

11. What do you think is a reasonable price for a full album?

lower than what I used to pay, I'll say that

1. Who is your favorite pop artist? The Fall.

2. When you hear a song, do you focus more on the music or the vocals? I’d generally say I focus on music, but if the vocalist is singing in a style I don’t like (I hate overwrought ululating) then that’s a show-stopper for me.

3. Do you think there is more room in the pop music scene for a female or a male artist? You're asking whether male or female performers are allowed more flexibility, right? I don’t pay much attention to the charts. It seems to me that female singers appear to be more prominent & popular, but it’s probably the case that there are more restrictions within the industry & popular perception as to what a female performer ought to be.

4. Who is your least favorite pop artist? Sarah McLachlan. I hate the way every one of her songs plods along with the same ethereal atmosphere. I hate the pinched look of sincerity she constantly wears. I hate that quiver in her voice that seems to be constantly present, as though she can’t let one line pass without reminding you just how passionate she is. She makes me sick.

5. What is your favorite pop song and why? Teenage Kicks by the Untertones. I think it's a model pop record - melodic, exciting and doesn't overstay its welcome.

6. What is your opinion on autotune?. Like anything other technique, it can be a cliché or it can be used cleverly.

7. Would you rather buy a physical CD or download from the internet? I still cling to the CD/LP, but I’ve really thinned out my collection in the past five years and I can definitely see me going fully digital if I ever have the time to fully convert my collection.

8. Are there any current trends in pop music that you like? I really haven’t paid much attention to much new music recently. All I can really say is I like a lot of the singer-songwriter-y stuff that comes out on Drag City Records.

9. Are there any current trends in pop music that you dislike? Too much emphasis on rhythm & production techniques over melody, I suppose, but I don’t think that’s a current trend (IE past few years) – more so a general trend over decades.

10. What do you think is a reasonable price for a single song? I can’t see ever paying for a single song, but I think $1 is a reasonable price.

11. What do you think is a reasonable price for a full album? $12-15, for a record or performer I don't know well, I suppose. There's a short list of performers whose new records I'll always want to hear, and I'll pay a premium to get them - $20-$30 for that group.

1. Who is your favorite pop artist?

I don't listen to much pop. Elton John is a wizard at good pop. Weezer makes some perfect examples of pop done right.

2. When you hear a song, do you focus more on the music or the vocals?

I guess it depends on what I'm digging at the time I'm hearing it. bass lines and drums are always an interest.

3. Do you think there is more room in the pop music scene for a female or a male artist?

meh, it doesn't matter as it's all controlled and force fed to everyone. shrug

4. Who is your least favorite pop artist?

BEP's sound like ass. Katy Perry can't sing.

5. What is your favorite pop song and why?

omg, that B.I.G. mash up with Miley Cyrus. that shit is super dope. nod

6. What is your opinion on autotune?

crap. it would be alright if it was just used here and there, for effect. but everyone is using it, and using it for ENTIRE tracks. disbelief

7. Would you rather buy a physical CD or download from the internet?

I'd rather have a digital file.

8. Are there any current trends in pop music that you like?

no.

9. Are there any current trends in pop music that you dislike?

yes.

10. What do you think is a reasonable price for a single song?

50 cents, with 90% of the points going to the artist(s)

11. What do you think is a reasonable price for a full album?

$5-7, again, with 90% of the points going to the artist(s)

Pop Music Opinion Survey

1. Who is your favorite pop artist? Definition, please? Is Janelle Monáe considered pop? If so, her. I also like Imogen Heap and OK Go. Lady Gaga's all right.

2. When you hear a song, do you focus more on the music or the vocals? Shouldn't the vocals be part of the music? confuse

3. Do you think there is more room in the pop music scene for a female or a male artist? I have no idea. I listen to very little of it.

4. Who is your least favorite pop artist? Just one? I think most pop music is utter crap.

5. What is your favorite pop song and why? Probably Tightrope by Janelle Monáe.

6. What is your opinion on autotune? I don't mind if it's used purely for effect - to introduce new sounds into the aural landscape. I hate it when it's used to hide the fact that an "artist" can't carry a tune or has an otherwise shitty voice.

7. Would you rather buy a physical CD or download from the internet? Depends. If I want an entire album, I buy a physical CD. If I just want the single, I download it.

8. Are there any current trends in pop music that you like? None that I can identify off the top of my head.

9. Are there any current trends in pop music that you dislike? The aforementioned autotune...and the promotion of people based on what they look like, rather than on any sort of musical ability.

10. What do you think is a reasonable price for a single song? Same as in the old days of vinyl 45s - around a buck.

11. What do you think is a reasonable price for a full album? If it's good, I have no problem paying $15 for an album - or $25 if it's a multi-disc affair.

A survey!! woot! Shades of Dan!

1. Who is your favorite pop artist? I could never answer this, but I'm enjoying Janelle Monae (her audacity at least), the bird and the bee, many of Kanye's projects, Jose Gonzalez and Junip.

2. When you hear a song, do you focus more on the music or the vocals? More often the music. But that's perhaps because I find most lyrics horribly unsophisticated and have started to ignore them from the onset.

3. Do you think there is more room in the pop music scene for a female or a male artist? If an artist is genuinely fresh, talented and smart in his/her approach to music, then yes, always.

4. Who is your least favorite pop artist? I couldn't answer this, but I'm SICK of all the young R&B/pop/dance Stepford "divas."

5. What is your favorite pop song and why? I could never answer this.

6. What is your opinion on autotune? Not intrinsically bad, but like any tool it can be -- and has been -- grossly abused.

7. Would you rather buy a physical CD or download from the internet? Download

8. Are there any current trends in pop music that you like? I love pop that borrows elements from more foundational genres and makes them accessible (but not "dumb"). Right now, I'm really digging classical influences -- baroque arrangements; compositions with full-on movements; use of unlikely instrumental voices like pipe organ, harpsichord, etc.

9. Are there any current trends in pop music that you dislike? Abuse of Autotune; fewer live drum tracks; a current lull in the creativity of hip hop, which I think remains a sorely underemployed cache of possibility.

10. What do you think is a reasonable price for a single song? $1 is pretty decent base price.

11. What do you think is a reasonable price for a full album? $10 for the equivalent of a single-disc LP is good. Less for an EP, more for double-discs, etc. And I also the majority of points should go to the artist(s).

I can only answer a couple of these:

Autotune sucks. It's for people that can't sing. No exceptions. And when someone that CAN sing uses it - like Prince has - it's a huge mistake.

The biggest trend in pop music that I dislike is the elimination of the guitar solo. In fact, I dislike all guitar sounds currently being used in pop music, and more specifically, pop rock music. They all sound the same - eighteen humbucker pickups run through as much distortion and fuzz they can afford. Ugh. It's like Phil Spector's Wall of Sound gone horribly, horribly wrong.

So, play guitar solos, play them up high on the neck and on the E and B strings, and easy on the distortion. Also, pick a key besides E sometimes.

Of course, I'm (almost) 52, so what do I know about popular music?

.

1. Who is your favorite pop artist?

Prince

2. When you hear a song, do you focus more on the music or the vocals?

The music.

3. Do you think there is more room in the pop music scene for a female or a male artist?

There's too damn many solo artists. We need BANDS.

4. Who is your least favorite pop artist?

It has always been Shitney Houston but these dead motherfuckers in the music scene today make her sound as funky as Rick James.

5. What is your favorite pop song and why?

I have no idea. I've always been more into funk than pop. I do like pop/rock though. All I know is, it sure as hell ain't nothing that came out in the last 20 years.

6. What is your opinion on autotune?

Shit.

7. Would you rather buy a physical CD or download from the internet?

I'd rather buy vinyl. As for CDs though, it varies. Somebody like Prince, I'm definately going to buy the CD because he still makes new music and I want it in it's released form, whether it's CD or vinyl.

As for anything else new that I like, I'd rather download it (not pay to download it, I want it for free) because the new stuff I've heard on the rare occassion that I actually like it, it still doesn't sound good enough for me to spend my money on. When it comes to the new stuff from other artists besides Prince that I like, if I can't have it for free, it's something I can live without because it's not GREAT like old music is.

As for old stuff, I used to be buying up a bunch of CDs of old stuff but now that I'm able to download, I'd rather download it....for free of course, because I be damned if I'm going to pay for a download of all things that is only a copy of something. I really would prefer the vinyl though.

8. Are there any current trends in pop music that you like?

Absolutely none whatsoever. I despise everything about it from the music, to the clothes, to the attitude. These are the absolute worst musical times in history.

9. Are there any current trends in pop music that you dislike?

First of all, they aren't current. They are the same shit that has dominated for the last 20 years....shit hop, neo stool, and adult contemporary.

10. What do you think is a reasonable price for a single song?

99 cents.

11. What do you think is a reasonable price for a full album?

$8.99
