Since the girls are older and I doubt their parents are still paying, and they are working two jobs, and live in 1 bedroom flats with 6 others, it doesn't seem to me they are terribly well off.

My experience with these overseas students (and my stay with a typical Malaysian family in Teluk Intan) showed me the family back home goes without so their kids can study in Australia. I had to share a room with my friend, her sister and grandma when I was there eek and all 3 kids came to Australia to study.

I HAVE met an extremely wealthy Chinese/Malaysian student who asked her family to buy her a house in Toorak while she studied, and a Chinese/Indonesian guy did homestay with us and I think the conditions at our place were substandard to what he was used to - he had servants back home falloff

Ah, interesting! I guess I'm just going on my experiences in the UK. You guys aren't so far from us here though. Maybe more Asian students go to Australia to study? hmmm I met a few very snobby Thai students in England who didn't want to mix with us peasants in dorms and cheap flats. These people owned property on private islands out here (which a friend got to visit, but I didn't, probably owing to my considering them snobby meaning I was giving off an unfriendly vibe lol ). The seemingly less well off Asian students I met in England tended to be just doing English courses and not degrees.

oh! all the examples I used were undergraduate courses - I didn't even think of coming all the way over here to study english! I met some Korean kids doing that in Cairns in November, they work in those 30 minute massage places.

Yeah maybe only all the posh kids went all the way to UK hmmm we aren't so far away here, and cost of living is lower here too I imagine.

I remember my best friend Jacklyne failed 3rd year graphic design and sat outside the Dean's office crying because her family would not pay for her to stay one more year, so he changed one grade by a measly 2% or something (he had compassion! worship ) It was a very subjective field, what one lecturer saw as great wasn't what another one liked sigh

My university specialised in medicine and business, so yes, it relied on the full fee paying students from asia - they sent folks up your way to round them up, entice them with god knows what lol HUGE asian student population, and if you wanted to make money, build student housing nod now of course since the Indian student bashing hoopla, we're not so high on the destination list any more, in fact India issued a travel warning recommending people NOT study in Australia.

he had this one staff member he wanted to fire so badly but she was on contract until her retirement, so he would deliberately change her grades now and then (he did it for me once too, saying "she failed you on this??? what a load of rubbish!!!!" and gave me a pass woot! )

Oh, of course being a white guy with a Thai wife here in Bangkok if I walk around a touristy bar area I imagine it might be assumed I'm a dude paying for a prostitute/short time kinda 'girlfriend'. I guess in all kinds of places ppl probably make assumptions about 'farang' with Thai girls, but it's not something that really affects us if we don't pay attention to it and let it.

Some Thais will assume if you're white you must be rich. Maybe sometimes it's best I'm NOT somewhere with my wife as ppl might think I'm not savvy and try to rip us off. Other times if I am there we'll get treated better as the baht signs in their eyes light up. What else? I'm sure there are other ways we're treated differently because of our interracial relationship, but it's more race issues in general as individuals and not to do with our relationship as such. I've never had Thai men say anything negative to me to suggest resentment about foreigners being with Thai women. To be honest I stopped thinking about these things a while ago so I might be blind to some stuff. We just get on with it and we've no real issues that affect us in any significant way. I don't wake up thinking 'another day waking up next to my Asian wife' lol and I forget she's even Asian or Thai, anything different, or even a different person to me. falloff I could explain that last bit but it'll only come out muddled. lol

Oh, that's awful, especially as they're not local and may only have been here a really short time. What a terrifying experience.

It's things like this that make me see Bangkok as a relatively safe place for such a huge and populous city. Forgetting the shady, more obscure areas most foreigners would never find themselves at night, all the lively night-life type places where people go out seem pretty safe. I've hardly ever seen any trouble. Back in my hometown in Cheltenham, a place with just 100,000 people, I wouldn't feel safe going clubbing on the main high street because of the violence that breaks out when the people spill out of the clubs. You see on the news about violent protests here though, and movies like 'Bangkok Dangerous' portray the place as this edgy, dark, crime-ridden megatropolis, but I just don't see it like that. It's got a rep for criminality, corruption, mafia, dodgy police, but most people are too non-confrontational to start trouble, I think. More happy drunks than all the aggressive yobs there seem to be in England (at least, back when I was living there). I don't know, it feels safe given it's a huge capital city.

I am all mixed up--creole mom from New Orleans, and I'll let you break down my dad: his father had a black mom and a half white, half black dad; his mom had a white father and Cherokee mother. (And my father looks like a skinny Saddam Hussein)

Of course black folks can tell that Im black, but non blacks call me everything from Rican to Mexican to Middle Eastern.

I dated practically every race I came in contact with: black, white, latina (my preference nod ), filipino, japanese...the only problem I ever had on the dating scene was the black girls who were my homies from friggin kindergarten were pissed when we got older and I dated white girls. In my neighborhood you could date anything...as long as it wasnt white. That did not go over well with the sistahs at all.

Now my wife is from Honduras (mom Honduran, father Turkish), but she just looks Mexican. Only problem I ever had with her was in those early days...she was hot as fuck and had that chola look (mexican girl gangster) and whenever we went out, I had to deal with "vatos" pissed that she was dating a ni**er (they could tell I wasnt Mexican!).

The real problem is our three kids. THEY HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO BLACK FEATURES AT ALL!!!! The two boys look like a mix between my wife and my dad, my daughter is the spitting image of my mom...and you cant tell my mom is black until she speaks (I know that sounds horrible but you know what I mean).

It hasnt really affected the younger ones, but my eldest son is really pissed that no one believes him when he tells them he's black. His white friends say "Who's black in your family?" "My dad." Their response..."your dads not black!" His minority friends tell him that his dad is "barely black" and call him a wannabe. Really bugs him.

Now back to my wife...can anyone tell me why its okay for her to have dated nothing but black guys (she's dated hispanics and whites but I know for a fact that no one but brothas made it to the bedroom) but I was a "sell out" for dating white girls? Never understood that shit.

I never had a problem with black men dating out of their race or whatever have you, nor does my sister. I could care less about whom dates whom, It just kinda get my panties in a twist when certain black guys would say " I don't date black women because they are too..." I have a younger cousin who has that mentality {his mother is half puerto rican} and the only girls he calls beautiful on his FB page are all ricans too and I don't have a problem with that but all I can do is shake my head at the fact he thinks such a way. I think some of them try to use that as a good 'excuse' to date non-black women. Hey fellas, date whomever you want but date them because that's who you're attracted to not because the women in your race/ethnicity are too yadda yadda and they don't know how to blah blah blah and vice versa. The funny thing is some men that never even dated black women or a woman of another race or ethnicity makes these generalizations. disbelief As for some black women giving other women funny looks or trying to punk them because they don't agree on who someone else is dating is {I mean NOT only black women because this happens with all kinds of people and has been happening for the longest}....I don't even have words. neutral

I was told that it is an honour to have somebody white as a friend. I had dinner at the house of an Indian woman who is a working collegue of an Indian friend of ours and my friend told me that everybody in the company was totally impressed that somebody white was invited at that woman's house and that that woman was so proud and kept talking about it for days and was so happy I liked it. On the otehr hand the same friend told me that she also got negative comments about being friends with somebody white. So some people adore me because of the coulour of my skin while others hate me, but everybody treats me different there just because I happen to be white.

This may get me in trouble, but, assuming you're not parading his whiteness around like it somehow makes you more fully human (and, sadly, some of us do still carry on this way in 2011), my guess is that's not disappointment you detect; it's jealousy that you've acquired real estate someplace those particular women have merely dreamed of visiting. confused

If that's the case -- and if your husband and you genuinely honor one-another -- I say let 'em suffer.

[Edited 1/26/11 17:25pm]

absolutely not! in fact it's funny because even though we're married, we do a few things separately as well. we have hobbies we do with our friends, etc but when we goout for dinner or we're at the super market, if there's a clique of blacks chicks we get stared at hard. Sometimes black dudes do it too. I don't even know why they feel so affected by it. What's it to them??

I'm curious: Where in California are you?

The funny thing is some men that never even dated black women or a woman of another race or ethnicity makes these generalizations. disbelief As for some black women giving other women funny looks or trying to punk them because they don't agree on who someone else is dating is {I mean NOT only black women because this happens with all kinds of people and has been happening for the longest}....I don't even have words. neutral

Guuurl I know that's right! It makes me sick really. I've met some black men who were into me because I was lighter skinned and crap. Ugh...made me sick. Generalizations that make no sense.

I'm white. My first wife was black. We used to get loooks from older people when we would go grocery shopping. And me, being the little prick that I am, always played it up. Whenever I noticed people staring at us I'd hold her hand or put my arm around her and smile at them. People better get used to it like it or not. This is the way it was meant to be, together, all people, not seperated based on skin color or nationality. Love knows no boundries....NONE!

Christopher damn!

I'm fairly certain that I've covered every race throughout the years...never had any major issues, even living in the deep south...

*can o' worms disclaimer:

I find it interesting that there are those that exclusively date ouside of their race, not because that's the way things have transpired but because they absolutely refuse to date within their race, that just seems odd to me...I guess the same could be said for dating exclusively within your race but that appears to have some semblance of natural order that most people understand; or at the very least, accept...either way, it all seems so...limiting

True and as I've stated before, generally speaking, black women (and Asian men) don't have the option/opportunity to seek quality mates of other races. It's easier for everybody else to jump the color line, but black women and Asian men are at the bottom of the desireability scale when compared to others.

Personally, I love me some bruhs and ain't tryin' to fuck/date/marry someone of another race. But it tickles me when folks try to advise black women to date "outside" AS IF it's that fucking easy. Oh, I think I'll just go into my basement and whip up a white boy to date. rolleyes

I personally don't give two pumps and a stroke what anybody else wants to do but I'm good with mine. thumbs up!

You know what? When I tell people how much I'm into Asian men, I get all kinds of disgusting looks and comments. But it's alright though...if other people don't like them, that's just more fore me....
