Bud Light Pays Millions for Party Hotel

Bud Light is turning Dallas' Aloft Hotel into the Bud Light Hotel for Super Bowl week.

The rebranding is just one example of lenghts corporations will go to promote thier brand during the Super Bowl.

Bud Light will host four parties on four nights, featuring over a dozen performers including Nelly, Snoop Dogg and Ke$ha.

The beer maker rented all 193 rooms for the week and it's building a 55,000-square-foot party and concert hall in the hotel's parking lot.

The question is, how much does it all cost to put on the week long Super Bowl party?

"It's kind of like MasterCard," said the hotel's general manager Scooter Yates. "It's priceless."

He declined to give specifics on just how much Bud Light is spending, but hotel and party planning insiders came up with an estimate of about $3.5 million.

That's $1 million to rent the hotel, another $1.5 million to rent and construct the outdoor structures complete with heating systems, flooring and bathrooms. Then, add another $1 million in talent fees.

If that seems high, insiders we spoke with say the estimate is probably on the low side.

Media Day Goes On As Planned

NBCDFW.com

The NFL is sticking to its Super Bowl schedule Tuesday despite an ice storm that has struck the Dallas area.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello sent out a Twitter message saying media activities at Cowboys Stadium will go on as planned. Both the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers are scheduled to be available for one hour for the hundreds of reporters covering Sunday's game.

Aiello tweeted: "The show goes on. Media day is on schedule. Drive carefully. The stadium roof is closed."

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has closed due to the storm, at least for a while. A wintry blast of ice, blustery winds and plummeting temperatures has also closed schools and snarled traffic.

Included in the events postponed are the NFL Play 60 challenge school visit with Dallas Cowboys Brian McCann and Danny McCray scheduled for Bebensee Elementary School in Arlington as well as two events in Dallas.

The Dallas events are the Welcome Home a Hero event with Cowboys players Phil Costa and Chris Gronkowski and a NFL Youth Football donation to be made to the Boys & Girls Clubs of North Texas by former NFL players Tony Casillas and Anthony Munoz.

Also postponed is the NFL and Nicktoons Debut Rush Zone with former player Michael Strahan which was to take place at the NFL Experience at the Dallas Convention Center.

Super Bowl week off to freezing start in Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—Super Bowl week is too cold so far for “The Freezer.”

B.J. Raji(notes), the 337-pound nose tackle for the Packers who’s drawn comparisons to former Bears standout William “The Fridge” Perry, made that clear Tuesday at media day.

“Too cold,” Raji said. “Feels like the AC is on.”

While the rest of the Dallas area slipped and slid through a miserable morning of ice, bone-chilling winds and light snow, the NFL stuck to its Super Bowl schedule. League spokesman Greg Aiello sent out a Twitter message saying media activities at Cowboys Stadium in suburban Arlington would go on as planned — and they did, with the roof thankfully closed high above the Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and hundreds of reporters in town for Sunday’s game.

“The show goes on,” Aiello wrote. “Media day is on schedule. Drive carefully.”

The news was a little more tenuous for travelers: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was closed for about an hour due to the storm, and primary tenant American Airlines canceled 800 flights—about half its daily service.

The wintry blast of ice, blustery winds and plummeting temperatures also closed schools and snarled traffic. Walkways outside Cowboys Stadium in Arlington were a sheet of ice and a temporary building set up on the grounds had a hole in it, curtains flapping in the stiff wind.

The Packers might even practice indoors this week if the weather doesn’t improve—just like they do at home.

“It’s a little too cold for me,” linebacker Clay Matthews(notes) said. “Texas is supposed to be hot and humid. I was looking forward to that. I am a California guy.”

Then again, receiver Greg Jennings(notes) said it felt like home.

“We’re in Green Bay right now,” he said. “We’re the home team and we’re at home with this weather.”

The storm was expected to dump more than a foot of snow on parts of the Midwest, and it covered roads all over North Texas with layers of freezing rain. The commuting crowd was much lighter, though, because schools were closed and many people simply stayed home.

The Super Bowl next year is slated for Indianapolis and the year after in the open-air New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey, raising the possibility of more chilly stories in the week before the game.

Michael Morris, director of transportation for the North Central Texas Council of Governments, said sand trucks gave the “bad storm” everything they had to keep roads clear.

“We’ll see what the NFL thinks of our response,” he said. “I don’t think the question is we will never have a Super Bowl again in a town that has had weather or the potential for bad weather because I think they want to showcase the investment they’ve made in their stadiums. I think the judgment will be how was our response. And I’m proud of our response.”

The National Weather Service says freezing temperatures will stick around at least through Thursday. There’s a chance of light snow as late as Friday.

The forecast for Sunday is much better—highs in the 50s—but Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers(notes) didn’t want to take any chances. He said he hoped the roof of Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, the billion-dollar showplace of Jerry Jones, would be closed for the game. The NFL decided a long time ago that it will be.

“I’m hoping they put the top on Jerry World, and I think they will,” Rodgers said.

The National Weather Service advised Wisconsin travelers bound for Texas to wait until Wednesday evening, with up to 20 inches of snow forecast for the Milwaukee area.

Don Zuidmulder of Green Bay said he wasn’t worried about weather affecting his flight Thursday.

“As long as I have 18 hours I’m going to get there,” said Zuidmulder, 68, undaunted by the 950-mile trip. “I’ll crawl if I have to.”

Associated Press writers Carrie Antlfinger in Milwaukee, Dinesh Ramde in Green Bay, Wis., Patrick Walters in Philadelphia and AP Sports Writers Eddie Pells, Barry Wilner and Dennis Waszak Jr. in Arlington, Texas, contributed to this report.

Steelers, Packers in awe of stadium

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Ben Roethlisberger was focused on the tiny screen of his video camera as he walked toward his assigned podium for Super Bowl media day.

Like so many others new to Cowboys Stadium, the Steelers quarterback was in awe. While a crowd of cameras surrounded him, Roethlisberger's own camera was focused on the $1 billion-plus building and the massive high-definition TV screens hanging over the field.

The Steelers and Green Bay Packers both had one-hour media sessions Tuesday at the stadium where neither has yet played a game.

"Awesome, awesome," Green Bay defensive back Charles Woodson said. "If every stadium could look like this, it would be awesome."

A crowd of more than 100,000 is expected for Sunday's game. The stadium built and financed mostly by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones opened before the 2009 season.

"It's sweet, I like it. Jerry did a good job, as you thought he would. Jerry's World," Steelers safety Ryan Clark said. "I don't know what to say about it, it's sweet. I'm not very often speechless, I talk a lot."

Packers fullback John Kuhn said it is clear why "they call it one of the wonders of the world."

About 15,000 temporary seats have been added for the Super Bowl. Hanging over the field as usual are the twin HD screens, about 72 feet high each and stretching nearly 60 yards between the 20-yard lines.

"It's unreal. ... It's worth every penny," Steelers receiver Mike Wallace said. "I can't even imagine it on Sunday. I know it's going to be crazy. It just feels different. It feels like the Super Bowl. It just feels like you're supposed to have a good game in here."

Big Ben, Bradshaw address bad blood

ARLINGTON, Texas – They were face-to-face now in the bowels of Cowboys Stadium, outside Locker Room C that Fox Sports had converted into an interview room. Here on Tuesday morning was the great Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback of the past (Terry Bradshaw) and the present (Ben Roethlisberger(notes)), and absolutely no one knew what was going to happen next.

The relationship between the two was toxic.

Last March, Roethlisberger was accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old college student in Milledgeville, Ga. When news broke, Bradshaw began shredding him in a series of interviews, even suggesting that if the Steelers original owner, Art Rooney, was still alive Roethlisberger would’ve been shipped out of town.

“I think Terry spoke a little too soon, before he knew all the facts,” Roethlisberger said Tuesday of an incident that led to no legal charges but ultimately a four-game NFL suspension.

Of all the criticism that rained down on him, Bradshaw’s repeated eviscerations may have stung the most.

“I’ve got two girls,” Bradshaw said of his 21- and 23-year-old daughters. “And anybody that is involved in mistreating women, it doesn’t sit well with me. I don’t know all the facts. Maybe I rushed to judgment too quickly. But it was just because it was the second time [Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault in 2008 also].

“That influenced my hostility because if that happened to my little girls …” Bradshaw couldn’t even finish the thought. This is what Roethlisberger has wrought. This is what Roethlisberger must repair. He may not have been charged with a crime in Georgia, but his actions were boorish and ugly. It crystallized his reputation as a low-life who just happened to be blessed with a strong arm.

The quarterback has spent this Super Bowl week trying to tell people he is a changed man as he prepares for Super Bowl XLV on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. Now staring into the face of Bradshaw he would have a chance to show it to perhaps his greatest critic.

The two hadn’t spoken in person since the incident. According to Bradshaw, Roethlisberger refused to shake his hand at Steelers training camp last summer, a scene Bradshaw described as “icy cold.” Their only interaction was a brief, shallow interview during Sunday’s Pro Bowl telecast. “He doesn’t like me, and I’m learning not to like him,” Bradshaw said last offseason.

Now Bradshaw wanted a sit-down interview and no one knew what Roethlisberger would do. The old Ben may have walked away. Or screamed in Bradshaw’s face. Or slugged someone. Who knows? “We weren’t sure he would sit down with me,” Bradshaw said. “Everyone was nervous.”

The normally unflappable Fox Sports crew was on edge. Well, everyone except for Bradshaw, who still maintains his cool-in-the-pocket-demeanor. “Terry was calming me down,” co-host Howie Long said.

Bradshaw was going to try to defuse the entire situation, approaching Roethlisberger immediately. “Terry wanted to talk to me,” Roethlisberger said. “He pulled me aside.”

Inside Locker Room C they went. It was set up for an interview but in order to clear the air, Bradshaw cleared the place out. Cameramen, sound technicians, producers and everyone else was told to leave. Fox producer Scott Ackerson had come up with the idea that if Roethlisberger was willing to speak to Bradshaw at all, they should first do it alone, man-to-man, eye-to-eye, Steeler-to-Steeler. If peace could be reached, then they’d turn on the cameras.

“Take everyone else out of the room, let the two of us sit down and have a talk,” Bradshaw said. “And if you want to get it off your chest, get it off.” They went back and forth for a few minutes, Bradshaw said. The bad blood had dated back to Bradshaw criticizing Roethlisberger for getting in a 2006 motorcycle accident. Some in the Roethlisberger camp believed Bradshaw was unduly harsh on Roethlisberger because he feared his record of four Super Bowl championships was in jeopardy.

Then came that drunken night in Georgia that left Bradshaw convinced he was right all along.

Roethlisberger didn’t provide any new facts about the case, according to Bradshaw. They both aired their various points of view. Roethlisberger was seeking fairness, perspective and understanding. He was asking for a second chance. He kept addressing his elder as “Sir” and “Mr. Bradshaw.” Bradshaw, meanwhile, wanted Roethlisberger to know he wasn’t jealous and he wanted him to break all his records. He then defended his role as tell-it-like-it-is television analyst.

“I did say to him, that for my comments, if I feel it’s necessary to say I’m sorry, ‘I’m sorry,’ ” Bradshaw said. “But basically I’m just doing my job. I don’t want to hurt anybody. I’m just in an unfortunate business where if you ask me a question I have to answer it honestly and if I don’t answer it truthfully then I’m not respected.”

According to Bradshaw, Roethlisberger was both humble about his failures and hopeful about his future. There are many people who don’t believe the sincerity of either of those things and, at one point, Bradshaw was probably the chief among them. Somewhere in that converted locker room, he changed his mind. “Of course people say, ‘Oh, it’s not real,’” Bradshaw said. “I think it’s totally real.”

Time will tell, which is what Roethlisberger says he understands. “Just keep plugging away,” he said of proving himself to the public. Stay out of trouble and do the right thing and perhaps, one day, the focus on him won’t be about the mistakes he’s made. It’s up to the people though. He isn’t owed forgiveness.

If fans seek signs of progress, of maturity, then maybe this is a small one. Last summer Ben Roethlisberger wouldn’t shake Terry Bradshaw’s hand, too much anger getting in the way of reconciliation. Tuesday, the two Steelers legends ended their discussion with a hug.

“We just both came to the conclusion that we’re Steelers, we’re part of that family,” Bradshaw said. “And I encouraged him that yesterday is yesterday and that I have his back and I support him 100 percent.

“But if he screws up again … I’ll do it again.”

^^Terry is right...old man Rooney woulda bounced Ben's azz 'cuz the Steeler organization don't play that thug mess. I was surprised when they let him off the hook with just a suspension but they let the league handle it...this time.

I think Ben knows that he's out of chances. One more incident of thuggery and he is out of the Steeler family, so Terry don't even have to worry about saying anything more.
