My own hair is short - and sometimes longer hair is needed for a role. I have a set of clip-in extensions that I've used in three shows - in addition to wigs and hairpieces. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

My hair is painfully thin and all the product and teasing I do is killing my hair. I'm actually going to get a consult on some keratin treated extensions tomorrow...I'll let you know how I make out!

Yes, definitely let me know how it goes. My regular stylist really discouraged me from getting them (due to the damage they can do to your regular hair), so that's why I haven't yet, but I still think about it all the time. |

I don't think these will damage. In fact, you have to go every 3-4 weeks to have them filled in case they slide out.
That wasn't code btw...

Watch Chris Rock's film, Good Hair, for additional insight. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Please!
That film was lacking on so many levels and rather misleading. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

I never said it was a comprehensive examination of why people get extensions, but it does discuss a few reasons why some people do. Obviously, there is no way one film could cover everything, but I didn't think it was that terrible. I found the parts on perming* and tonsure very interesting.
*I'm caucasian and where I grew up, "getting a perm" meant getting a permanent wave/curl, not straightening one's hair. [Edited 1/20/11 9:18am] The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The demonstration of how strong the straightening chemical is was the best part of the film. If the chemical agent can eat through aluminum then you know it's about to destroy your hair folicles. Other than that....I just thought the film sucked. Hair extensions, wigs, pieces, chemicals, have been around for as long as people have had hair and virtually every ethnic group has experimented with them. To me, the film wasn't about good or bad hair or even his daughter's issues with hair...it was just Chris's stab at sistahs with weaves. Shit his own wife is unbeweavable so why wasn't she featured in the film?! I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

The female housemates on the reality TV show "Jersey Shore" all seem to wear hair extensions too. I think hair extensions look pretty.
About 20 years ago, I wore a hairpiece (one of those clip on style ones), because I loved long hair, but could never grow my hair past my shoulders. I thought it looked pretty, although some of my female co-workers were making snide remarks about it behind my back. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

My daughter had gorgeous hair down to her butt. Turn about 14 and magically her hair kept getting shorter and shorter. Now she is sixteen and wears extentions. Stupid child. Peace. Love. Prince

This happens a lot! Most do not know that hair texture changes every 4 years or so. Also, most people have about 5 different textures in their hair .... especially if the hair is curly (tight or loose curls).
This is why the hair may become more delicate as a child ages (making breakage more likely).
Ever notice a side of your hair that behaves better than another side? This why hair tends to grow quicker on one side than another. Some people have extremes in texture in one head of hair.
I have to chime in and say the TYPE of brushes and combs used for your hair texture is EXTREMELY important.
The type of implements you use to do your hair is the difference between a healthy head and tons of breakage.
Using the right brushes and combs factors in just as equally as using the right shampoos and conditioners. IMHO.
My fine hair will snag all up and rip off in the wrong brush/comb or if I use a dryer that gets too hot. All of it plays a part.
