The fact that he aims most of his arrows at a roomful of celebrities who stay surrounded by synchophants is the very reason he's chosen to host award shows.
He taps into the dualistic fascination demonstrated by the folks who buy Star, Us, People and other Hollywood-worshipping and Hollywood-ripping magazines.
And, I bet he guarantees the shows their highest ratings. | |

I think it was very entertaining. Come on, celebs are simply court jesters, and that is their career choice (and it can pay as if they were kings), and he was simply jesting them all. And the Hollywood Press is truly a joke. It's like a bunch of uncles in a rowboat voting on films.
It was like the old David Letterman vibe on the golden globes with those jibes!
