if you try to get out of it by saying something weird they can hold you in stand by mode for a few days anyway. I friend said something weird like the judge did it... she was dissmissed to the waiting area and sat there all day and then told to come back the next day and the next.

won't be doing this lol

i was last summoned to jury duty a couple of years ago. the case I was selected to be culled from involved the murder of a mother by a daughter. I casually knew one of the parties involved, and was excused from service because I wouldn't be able to serve without prejudice.

I was then put back in the pool I was then asked (along with about 20 others) about a medical malpractice case, in which I knew the doctor involved. back into the pool for one last time.

Again, medical malpractice and I knew the doctor.

the judge upon dismissing us said that we all seem to find time for family vacations, and weddings, and other things, but when it comes to jury duty, all of the sudden everyone can't serve for one reason or another. I understand his point and frustration (I know him personally as well).

Point is Nurse, if you had to work, you'ld make arrangements for your son, wouldn't you.

actually, I took off from work to take care of my son wink You see no one comes before him, but God wink he is my only child and no matter whose case it is I'm sure all parents understand that. Of course, I'd want a good jury if it was my case, but I would understand that my circumstances whatever they may be for needing a trial by jury is not someone else's fault.

I was excused once due to a work related event that I was travelling to (and partially running). It involved a large amount of money that had been spent booking travel and rooms, all of which was done prior to receiving the summons. Since then, I would go (gladly), but I've never even been called into a courthouse. I always do the online checking and the last four times my group hasn't been needed. shrug

it's not that I wouldn't want to... it's just with this job, it would be hard/bad if I was not here

and... you don't get to pick the case lol .. I would never want to be on a murder or rape trial... I don't think I could take seeing evidence photos, or ppl crying... and if they were mob or something on that level, would I or my family be in danger..?

also, what if the person on trial really is innocent but was framed or something..

I know they're not the best 'excuses' but shrug .... something that might make me cry (and I cry easily, unfortunately) might bias my view/compromise my ability to 'judge' fairly, and I'd feel such guilt if I helped condemned somebody who was actually innocent..

Well, any judge will listen to you explanation and weigh the importance/validity of work excuses. The problem there is that work is technically not supposed to be an excuse.

In regards to the other part, it could work either way for you. Saying any of those other things might get you immediately excused, or they might make you VERY desirable to a prosecuter or defender. So be careful if you ever become part of the process of a big case like that. lol

Your best bet is to just make it seem as though you couldn't possibly be impartial, no matter what kind of case you're called for.

In new york, doctors and lawyers were exempt from jury duty. they changed that rule, and now one does not get called for jury duty as often. it's really helped.
