I´m always friendly to them everytime I see them because I find it very difficult not to be friendly....they are just such nice and clean and friendly people on the surface. One day they paid me a visit and were quite surprised when I already knew that they don´t drink any coffee ( so I offered them orange juice instead). I can´t stand their anti-gay, anti-feminist and anti-agnostic agenda though, and I wonder how they talk about certain groups behind closed doors. LDS (Mormon) who are single will basically do anything short of penetration because it is not sex unless there's penetration. I will clarify that not all do this, but it is common. That's not how they're taught it's considered a loophole. Needless to say, when I found out about this, I had to step-up the sex talk with my daughters so they would not be mislead by one of the "saints". I'm firmly planted in denial

I live in Utah...I'm an Athiest. (just to be clear on where this is from)
I've never heard of a funeral non-mormons couln't attend. But there are such things as "Temple Marriages" (not all Mormons have a temple marriage)
You can't attend a Temple marriage (or Temple in general) unless you are [term coined as] temple worthy. It's called a Temple Reccomend. They only allow those considered worthy to attend temple. (That's different than regular church meetings). To be "temple worthy" you need to behave in the ways taught by the church, pay tithing (10%), and be approved through an interview.
Honesty doesn't seem any wierder than any other religion to me.
Clean living folk...no sex before marriage, no drinking or smoking. You can't drink coffee or tea, but you can have a Coke and still attend Temple.
The church is run (at local levels) by volunteers.

Your personal experience aside, there are plenty of Black Mormons. Though I don't know why. Seems to me (my opinion) that Black men were only allowed into the preisthood in responce to the civil rights movement.

Can't say I've ever a met a person that belonged to a faith that didn't break some rule in some kind of way. So I guess my responce would be "DUH".
(and you can drink caffenine in the LDS church...though many members abstain)

Why don´t they drink caffeine products? I mean, are there any rules in their scriptures that prohibit coffee and tea? And what about decaf coffee? I also heard that alcohol is a bit hard to get in Utah and that it´s only available in hotels. Is that true? And doesn´t that somehow clash with the constitution and the interests of those who don´t want to be a part of that lifestyle? Does living in a Mormon environment somehow interfere with your own, non-Mormon lifestyle, and if so, in which ways? " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

That's closer to what I observed re: caffiene. She loved chocolate.

They believe in living prophets, and they do have rules about coffee and tea. It comes from one of their books called "Doctrine and Covenants" in an area called "Word of Wisdom"
You can buy Beer in the grocery store, but you have to buy wine and harder drinks at state run liquor stores. Utah is not a "dry" state, nor does it have any "dry" counties, which makes it more liberal that some (though few).
Drinks are regulated in that there are limits to the amount of alcohol allowed in them. (I don't remember the specifics...sorry.) That means you don't get as stiff a drink as other areas of the country. There are bars, and restaurants can serve drinks. (They have to apply for a liquor license to sell alcohol)
I don't see any constitutional issues that clash with these rules.
Doesn't really impede my life in any way, I buy liquor at the state stores and I'll occasionally have a beer or drink with a meal.

OK, I see. Thanks for the info. ( I was referring to separation of church and state, and therefore being able to buy alcohol wherever you want). " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Shyra said: Just curious. I wonder how many, if any, black members the Mormon church has. When I first moved into my house, I used to see two white-shirted, black tied caucasian fellows walking the community and knocking on doors. I figured they were Mormons, but I was really surprised they would try to convert us black folk since I have NEVER seen a black Mormon. Gladys Knight is actually a prominent member of the Mormons. I actually saw her perform at a small Mormon church here in Maryland. My father's co-worker had given us tickets to the performance. My father and I thought the performance would be at a local club. When we got the tickets, we saw that the venue was a local Mormon church. I was raised mostly in Baptist churches, but I no longer considered myself a Christian at that time. Gladys made a lot of jokes referring to the low black Mormon population. I have to say. I have NEVER felt more welcome at a church, as I was at that church. As far as race went, they seemed to stress that the church was open to anyone. [Edited 1/17/11 14:02pm]

A good friend of mine was a member for some time. She joined when we were friends for some years and I could not believe it and it made our friendship more difficult as we had quite some religious discussions that I did not want to have. She doesn't practice it anymore as it got too difficult for her to have that faith and be a lesbian. With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Didn't know that. I have heard that the Mormon church doesn't have a positive history concerning black people, nothing specific but just that it hasn't been good, but that they've revamped their attitude over the last few years.

Just recently Utah loosened up its liquor laws a little, but it still has some quirky features. The beer served in Utah has a lower alcohol %. People will drive to Wyoming & Nevada to get "real" beer. You cannot be served a "double". Say you want a tequila sunrise with a double shot of Patron, they will bring you the mixed drink made with one shot and the second shot in a shot glass. You then have to pour the second shot into the mixed drink. If you order a drink in a restaurant you must order food to accompany it. In just the last year or two, they finally elimated the "Zion Curtain" meaning the bottles of alcohol at the bar may now be seen from the dining area. Previously, it had to be concealed behind at least a partial wall. As for the history of blacks in the church, they were not allowed into the church until 1974 (I think). I've heard that it's because it was believed black skin was the mark of Cain after he killed Abel. That could be wrong though. I've not looked into it. Utah is a wonderful state to live in, but it is very Mormon-centric. I have LDS friends that moved out of the state and & had to move back because they couldn't handle how people outside of Utah viewed/treated them because the were LDS. As a non-Mormon, the one thing that I really don't appreciate is and sorry I'm blanking, I think it's called Semenary, is available @ the public schools. It is the only class that cannot be dropped without a parent's permission. At least it used to be...I don't follow that. I'm firmly planted in denial
