I love that stuff! Especially the super thin slices - totally fascinating to look at the body that way. I remember reading an article about where the bodies came from (for one of the exhibits, anyway). I believe it was a prisoners who had either died or were being put to death and they decided to donate their bodies to the artist. Then, they had to quick freeze them SUPER cold to be able to get the VERY thin full body slices.

i dunno. i do know it's art, but poor little bart looks sort of afraid. i'm thinking maybe small children ought not to be exposed to flayed corpses, whether they went peacefully or no. neutral

lol @ the Bart comment.

Art is subjective, so there's a chance that any kind of art is going to annoy, offend or anger somebody, somewhere, at one time or another. Trust me when I say that a lot of "modern" art does nothing but piss me off. lol So, in regards to the various body exhibits that have happened around the world over the last decade, I would certainly never take anybody to something like that unexpectedly. I'd make sure they knew full well ahead of time what it was and if they didn't want to go, fine. I get it. But for me, TOTALLY fascinating. I can just stand there and stare at each piece for minutes.

Art in general, though - as I think was mentioned at least a little bit in this thread - has always contained subject matter meant to arouse some sort of response. The paintings, be they religious, military, sexual, abstract, surreal or just a plain old portrait, weren't painted to be hidden from view. They were painted to be a reflection of the times and a window into the souls of society and/or the artist who created them. I can't imagine there has ever been very many artists who didn't want somebody to look at their paintings, or hoped they would generate no reaction (be it emotional, physical or cerebral). Now, that happens sometimes, but I don't think that was their intention. lol To that affect, art has ALWAYS contained depictions of violence and nudity. Often together. And often in pieces depicting subject matter where you would think it inappropriate. Granted, not ALL art. There is clearly an abundance of landscape and portraiture out there that contains none of either. But I think it's safe to say that if you go to any major museum in any city in the world you're likely to find images as graphic as those at the art show Erin attended. It's also likely they'd be much larger, possibly better - lol my opinion, of course - and even MORE disturbing. Many of the religious renaisance paintings, though exceptionally beautiful, are pretty damn scary. lol

Now, I'm no fool (most of the time lol ), so I realize I'm expressing these opinions as someone who doesn't have kids. But to my way of thinking, none of the art at that exhibit is as disturbing as seeing people fighting, being shot repeatedly or blowing things up in a video game, a tv show, a comic book or a movie. All things children are exosed to on daily basis. shrug That's just they way I see it. Sex, nudity and images thereof, if discussed appropriately, should never be looked at as "bad", "weird", "uncomfortable" or "evil". Violence on the other hand should be, but it RARELY is.

Oh, and as far as children and flayed corpses goes, at least it could be educational. I'd bet a lot more kids would be into it than adults. Adults see things like that as representations of mortality. Kids are just like, "whoooaaa... is that a kidney?" lol

i was invited to attend the body works exhibit and decided to go. i wouldn't really say i 'enjoyed' the exhibit, although i was both fascinated by the anatomy i was also creeped out by the lingering traces of humanity in each piece.

i found it pushed my envelope a bit. ex: flayed corpse wearing a bowtie and bowler hat comically tilted back, skull teeth grinning slyly at me. i guess the underlying source of my unease was my own mortality. made laughable by the human remains on display.

it helped to know that each exhibit was the remains of a person who actually wanted to not-quite exit the earthly realm in this fashion.

Wow, that exhibition looks very interesting. Is there a certain theme or are all those paintings by the same artist? Is he a local artist?

I think it´s great that you took your son to something like that, even though he´s very young. It is probably debatable whether it´s good for him to see two women licking each other ( personally,I wouldn´t have minded to see something like that at his age wink ) but all in all, I think you are doing a lot of good things when it comes to raising your son.

Parents like you are , in my opinion, the cornerstone for a better future and a better society in general. I was also very impressed by what you wrote in that other thread about that pink wearing boy. Hats off to mothers like you!

nod thumbs up! worship

Do kids still read comic books? Every time I go into a comic store, it's full of middle-aged nerds (like myself). lol

I opened a recent issue of the X-Men spinoff, New Mutants and there was a double page spread ad for adult TV shows on Showtime while the inside covers were ads for wrestling action figures. confuse

Me too nod. Just some weeks ago the brother of my bf sent his 6 or 7 year old grandson out of the room when a topless woman on TV was kissing a man. But no one of all the adults present cared when this 4 year old step daughter was watching a horror movie for people over 18 some minutes later disbelief.

With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

I don't really watch violent programming myself and we've talked a lot about images of violence and the real consequences it has, which you never really get to see in movies/shows.

So as a result, he just doesn't like violence, he's told me that he doesn't like a few cartoons because it's "too violent".

But some nudity and kissing? I have no issue with him seeing that.

Your son's expression. falloff

Looks like he's thinkin:

They told me there'd be beer but all I see is a bunch of fruity wine glasses.

By this point all he kept doing was ask for a drink of milk. He was not happy that all they had was beer and wine.

I actually ended up taking both boys out for a snack while his parents mingled. See, I can be a good mom! lol

Okay, what the hell... you're son's friend is wearing a shirt that looks like it is a cut out of the head of the John Berkey King Kong painting done for the 1976 King Kong, a poster that I was drawing over and over again at the age of....6.

I wish I had had gorilla t-shirts, and a King Kong t-shirt.... I'm gonna go make me one.

Yes, they definitely do. Fewer than in days gone by, but there's still a constant stream of kids in and out of the comic shops I spend time at. I also see them standing aroung reading them in bookstores all the time (which actually annoys the crap out of me lol ).
