Ganja & Hess (1973)

Would-be Blaxploitation vampire flick that unfolds rather as an evocative impressionist meditation on the embattled Pan-African cultural psyche. It would prove too slow, too kaliedoscopic and probably too self-important to be widely marketable in its day, effectively ending the film career of promising writer/director Bill Gunn (screenwriter, The Landlord). But the movie, available only since 1998 in the original director's cut, reportedly received a standing ovation in 1973 at Cannes and today is celebrated in cult circles as a daring statement that both Black Cinema and horror could be art -- cerebral, socially roguish and unfettered by genre -- even if darned weird.

3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Just be ready for something slow and artsy-fartsy, with "realistic" vampirism in the vein of, say, Martin.

I don't think it's as great as some cult followers make out, but it definitely is an interesting departure for its time.

127 hours by danny boyle was pretty good. it was quite different from 28 days later and 28 weeks later, the zombies all seemed to be gone in this sequel it was miles better than howl, which i hated as i don't like black and white, i don't like cartoons and i don't like poetry i also saw tarantinos list of his top 20 movies as questlove posted to say he say 13 of them or something. i think i've seen 17 at least of them, hating cartoons means i haven't seen tangled and the dragon one, but i did see toy story 3 which i thought was a load of shit compared to the first 2. the only other movie i haven't seen from his list i'll maybe watch at the weekend. out of the list, enter the void is probably the best movie of the year by far, it blows everything else out of the water, avatar, tron, you name it, it's the closest thing to an acid trip as a movie. nothing like head or 200 motels, it's just fucking mental. most people won't like it though, most people probably couldn't watch more than the first 5 minutes, especially not in a dark room or cinema, it makes your fucking eyes hurt and brain bleed, but it's the most amazing thing i've seem in a long time. imagine the jupiter sequence in 2001 and watching that for the first time back in 1969 and that's an indication of that movie. i think social network will probably take best movie, even if it's not finchers best. i'm a big fan of his, and it's a great movie, but zodiac and button were more deserving of an academy award

i thought rabbit hole was trying too much for an academy award to be a good movie. i hate it when movies are spoiled by trying to be painfully oscar worthy. at least with something like the kids are alright, the movie is a bit of fun, i don't mind painfully depressing if it's interesting either. RH wasn't bad, but it wasn't great

i saw that in the cinema. what a load of shite. it makes alien erection seem like a good movie. considering the guy that directed A4 did amelie and delicatessen, what the fuck was he thinking when he made that? i bet he was the only one that was happy when predators came out to show A4 wasn't the worst in the crossover franchise

the only way they could recover from predators is if they made a predator vs harry potter and the aliens killed them all in a 18 rated torture porn celebration at hogwarts and that bird turned 18 and got her tits oots for the lads

and if they do make that into a fucking movie, which guaranteed they will (and i bet in 3d), then i want my fucking cut of the profits

I watched the original last night on Bluray.

The transfer is stunning the whole movie still looks great today.

AVP was a disgrace imo.So was Predators Rodriguez borrowed far too heavily from the original to try and capture perfection and failed.

I have to admit that i was gutted they sorted the Carl Weathers arm mistake in the new edition smile
