Do you have any experience in home recording or recording period? If not, I'd suggest you walk before you run. Z.Z. posted some nice info in your other thread. I'd start off with using sometype of free recording software, like Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) or test before you purchase, Goldwave Recording Software (http://www.goldwave.com/)
You can purhcase a USB Microphone.
Samson CO10 Condenser Microphone
Audio - Technica AT2020 U...Microphone
Here's the link to a mate of mine, Brian Wahl, he's just started a blog sharing his knowledge about home recordings.
The learning curve is "low" and this will probably suit you till you have better grasp for more sophisticated recording. That is, if you are a beginner.
Oh, you'll need some studio monitor speakers and some studio monitor headphones, scroll down to see more headphones, different price ranges.

but is this really the place for a musical novice to learn how to make recordings like Michael Jackson & Prince?
"Hey guys, I'd like to make music like Beethoven, you know da-da-da-DUUUUUMMMMM da-da-da-DUUUMMMMMMM....so, like, how do I do that? With a machine or something?" My Legacy

My suggestion is that Michael Jackson worked with the most talented producers money can buy & Prince is one of the most accomplished musicians of the last 30 years.
You should learn to play an instrument or take some vocal lessions, or production classes. Join a band or find a collaborator. Find a teacher.
If you want a quick solution, you could use Garage Band or some other software like Acid (I have this one, it's very easy to make music with) but your music will be generic sounding
Music takes years to learn and lots of money to make it sound good on recordings My Legacy

if you turn out to be a genius however, you can still make good music with simple tools

that's true, but the programs that tend to make it easy for you mean you end up using pre-fab parts (bassline, chords, etc) that you purchase the rights to use along with the software. So in most cases you're not really writing the music so much as re-arranging it.
But yes, a genius could use it in a totally original way.
I'm thinking that a genius would not have asked the original question, but I am a jerk sometimes! My Legacy

You can do Garage Band fully manually, you don't need to use ANY fills - just record your parts in the appropriate instruments on a USB keyboard.
I once had a dream with a song in it, and I played it on the piano when I woke up, and added parts and extended it into a full song, and recorded it with Garage Band. It sounds like a Mexican song
I already decided Liliana Felipe should sing it With full brass section

so it's just a multitracker, then. But you can use prerecorded loops, too? My Legacy
