pc help

I recently had to re-install my operation system - windows vista home version - on my pc.

Luckily most of my stuff was on an external drive. Still I lost some information.

Worst though is that I've lost all sound and I can't find a way to switch it on, Pc doesn't play avi files either.sad

Can anyone give me advice to get things going again?

Itunes is also gone, but for that I'd also need sound.

I've found this "windows old" folder which I might be able to salvage from.

Any advice would be welcome!!

sounds like you need to install the drives for your soundcard. what type of pc is it? dell/hp or home build? have you run the windows update? do that at least twice to make sure all the updates, just in case it updates your soundcard

for avi files, download the divx installer or better the CCCP pack that should get most codecs on the pc

your windows old folder may hold the drive details. you can go into the control panel and system information and look at devices and see what isn't working (ie. the soundcard) and install drivers by pointing to your windows old folder and system32 within there

once you've downloaded the updates, reboot the pc, and repeat the process until it says you have no more updates. if it's a dell it might give you the drive update via windows

if not you can go to the dell website, put in the model of the pc and it will give you the drive to download and install

thing is, if it was a dell pc that you haven't modified, and you reinstalled windows from a dell disc it should have installed the drivers. you should also have a dell driver disc that you can put in the pc and install the drivers if you get stuck, but i'd suggest download the most recent driver from online
