Frank Lloyd Wright

He is the most amazing architect in my opinion.

The Guggenheim... they said he was crazy for not putting stairs in this building... he wasn't and it worked! Brilliant!

The Guggenheim

"Of the museum's interior Wright said, "We are not building a cellular composition of compartments, but one where all is one great space on a continuous floor... no meeting of the eye with angular or abrupt changes of form..." It has been called one of the great architectural spaces of the 20th century."

Fallingwater residence 1935 "Reinforced-concrete cantilever slabs project from the rocks to carry the house over the stream. From the living room, a suspended stairway leads directly down to the stream. On the third level immediately above, terraces open from sleeping quarters, emphasizing the horizontal nature of the structural forms. Wright himself described Fallingwater as "a great blessing --one of the great blessings to be experienced here on earth."

There were a few houses that he built with round windows... the one that I was in had many.. the whole interior was built with seamless glass... from the main house you could go to this 40 foot tall, round tower and look out upon the property. It was gorgeous!

There was a building that he designed that had huge pillars that were like two or three stories tall and he ended up having to prove to the building inspectors that the building would not collapse. They were concerned not only because of the size of the pillars, but how far Wright had spaced them. I will look for it... for some reaon I think it was an IBM building, but I'm not sure. I don't know of one that was designed on rollers.

I think about FLW every time I come to the org. My computer time is spent at my Cassina writing desk and chair, designed by FLW.

He was an amazing American designer - a master.

In college we drove from Minneapolis to Cloquet, MN (just south of Duluth, about a 2 hour drive) in the middle of the night to see the world's only gas station designed by Frank Lloyd Wright just for something fun to do. We got out of the car, looked at it, admired it, realized we forgot to bring a camera, then went to Perkins and had some coffee and drove home.

FLW was a genius.

I only have one picture on the walls of my study-room. The Falling Water House. Kind of keeps me going.

Some people are like Slinkies...

They're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Interesting note: The character of Howard Roark in Ayn Rand's The FountainHead is based loosely on Frank Lloyd Wright's work. I doubt, however, that Wright lived up to Roark's character, though...

No... Wright never lived in that house. Though, a lot of his windows do look similar. I will see if I can find pictures of his homes later today... they are just as beautiful. smile
