How does that work?
Also: Someone told me you can "rent" books on one or some of these e-readers - is that true?
The thing is you don't even need the kindle device to access the free books. Go to Amazon and download the kindle app and you then have access to hundreds of thousands of books that are either copyright free or offered for free. Most of the books I have are classics but check out the list. There are lots of great titles. I had the app on my laptop for a few months before I bought the kindle and it automatically synched the books I had downloaded on my laptop onto the kindle when it arrived. As far as renting books, I think the Barnes and Noble device does that but there are some restrictions. Not sure exactly how that works though.

kindle entry level model does have a wi fi webbrowser
there are links for a kindle to 'borrow' books from an elibrary, but nook has a better method, i believe
for 139$ you cant go wrong

in my sister's review on page 1 of this thread, she said the Nook has a LendMe service
"Another thing I don't like about it is their LendMe service. This is where you can add friends who also have a Nook or Nook Color and borrow their books for free for up to 14 days. The bad thing about that is you have to make sure you've read the book already because you can't get it back until the 14 days is up. But the worst thing about the LendMe service is that you can only lend a book out to one person, EVER. Once you lend that book to your friend, you can't loan it again to anyone else, ever." Hag. Well...I did it. I bought the wifey a Nook. The basic black-&-white wifi unit.
$149 @ my local Barnes-&-Nobles store.
THEN, there are the screencovers, the back savers, the sleeves, and the covers. WHAT A RACKET!!! The average price for a cover is like $40. They had some "designer" covers that were $185!!!! THAT'S MORE THAN THE &#$%*@ NOOK ITSELF!!!!
...and by the way...the color Nook is AWESOME! It's like a "mini iPad" for $249. Ah-ma-zing! I think that I'll give her the one I bought for X'Mas and give her the option to upgrade if she wants afterwards. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

YES!
Depends on where and how you are going to be getting your ebooks, though. There are MANY places to get them for free, so a major point should be what file formats your reader recognizes. For instance, last I knew, the Nook didn't read a Microsoft file or two (such as .doc) but that may have changed now. Anyway, you can download epub, pdf, lit and doc files all over the place for free. So long as your reader, uhh, reads 'em, everything else it tech stuff, and I don't have a clue. Read that the Nook used to turn pages slower, but the newer ones are almost exactly the same as the Kindle. Also read (bought a Nook for my brother-in-law for Christmas because that's what he asked for) that they've made it VERY difficult to mod the newer Nooks. So if you're interested in geeking out like that it may not be the best choice. Beyond that I guess you're just comparing screen sizes, brightness, b&w or color, wi-fi or 3G, etc. I didn't read anything about any of them not doing what they're advertised as doing as far as allowing you to read books electronically goes.

You don't even need the Kindle app. There is a pc epub reader, an adobe reader (other than the pdf reader), and a microsoft reader. I told my brother-in-law all this and he said the point is that he doesn't want to have to commute with his laptop and and store it at work (he doesn't have a desk job). I couldn't really argue with his logic on that point.

I guess I should have read to see if they'd already decided before I posted. That's the same model I purchased for my brother-in-law, but I'm not gettin' him ANY of the racket stuff. He can buy that stuff himself.

I plan on purchasing a Sony ereader touch edition, but not for reading books. I'm going to use it to have clients sign contracts electronically as opposed to wasting paper.

I will keep abreast of this thread. I echo pretty much what you' said above. I would also like to add that I find reading on an eReader easier than a book itself. Although it's a very minor hassle, I like the ability to turn a page at the touch of a button which allows me to keep the story flowing. There's Joy In Expatriation.

My friend won a kindle, I was surprised how it was just like looking at a page right out of a book. It doesn't look like a computer screen. It's great, some time this coming year I may just get one. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

have you consulted an attorney as to whether or not a signed e reader is legally binding? I know that for credit card purchases they are..
