i was in a communication class once (theory or interpersonal or something) and the professor asked how many of us were feminists... i think the class was about 70% female & 30% male, and i was the only muthafucka to raise a hand period... male or female...

everyone stared at me... the guys thought i was trying to be funny or something... and i don't know if the girls were able to think or not (a bunch of sorority chicks AKA sorostitutes)...

so the professor asked my why and i told him, "i'm all about women having equal rights as men, and regardless of whether people in this class realize this or not, they don't have it... women are still getting paid less than men for doing the same job in most instances... furthermore, there are still jobs that a very qualified woman would probably not get just because she's female (auto mechanics, etc)... all these bitches in here need to recognize that it was the feminists that made it possible for their asses to be out of the kitchen and into the workplace... they wouldn't be able to vote or even sit in this muthafuckin' classroom..."

then i remembered again that these were sorostitutes that i was dealing with... and they probably just go to college to whore around and marry a prospective young fratguy that may seem like he has potential at the time but will most likely end up in a shit job (or with no job), worthless, lazy, balding, and drunk... nod...

and just for the record, as a general rule, i don't refer to women as bitches... but these girls annoyed the piss out of me... biggrin

You know, this is a really great topic. Feminism is absolutely on the same intellectual and spiritual level as Civil Rights and other human rights issues. Yet people--especially women themselves--are afraid to identify themselves as feminists, because the right-wing, conservative party (in this country especially) has done such a good job of equating feminism with man-hating, non-shaving, hairy, unattractive, angry women. And that is absolutely NOT what feminism is about.

It seems to me that very few would hesitate to identify themselves as a human rights proponent, yet these same people tend not to identify women as needing any type of representation. I think the romantic/sexual issues that come between men and women on a personal level clouds the fact that things are still not equal or fair. There are still major double-standards held, as far as what men and women are "supposed" to be, and societal standards that women are "supposed" to meet in order to be viewed favorably.

Anyway, I could go on and on about this topic. I could discuss rape, abandonment and poverty of women and children, domestic violence, etc., and how women are still not themselves standing up for what's right and to be treated right. But I'll hold off for now... smile

this is one of the reasons everyone stared at me oddly when i identified myself as a feminist... people think that the term carries negative connotation, when in fact, it's just about having equal rights for all people, regardless of sex... it's another form of civil rights... everyone should be a part of it...

and i guess the other reason is because i'm a guy... i think a lot of people think that guys can't be feminists... rolleyes...

Personally, I consider myself a feminist. Granted, I don't agree with hardcore militant feminists, but the spectrum for this group is just as broad as it is for any group.

Quite honestly, there aren't really all that many "hardcore militant" feminists around, but they get the attention because of the extremist perspective. The more conservative element likes to make it sound as if there are TONS of crazy, angry women running around out there practicing witchcraft and having as many abortions as possible and being lesbians just to diss men! lol It's like saying that all civil rights proponents are down with Farrakhan or other more militant groups.

I absolutely know for a fact that the way I behave and the way I demand to be treated, (without even a mention of feminism unless it's for historical purposes) speaks louder than any identification with a group or movement does.
