Or they could allow it through then charge you the overdraft fee and leave you wondering "If I didn't have the money, why'd you let it process?"

Oh they good for that too! Except when I want them to. I even asked the teller why not let it go through and bang me overdraft like you usually do. She was like...but the card will be declined because you don't have enough. Really? But when I have $5 and accidentally charge $6 you quick to charge $35....
Banks are retarded!

My bank pays me to hold on to my money. I get interest on both my checking and savings account. It's a really small amount, but at least they're paying me.
You need to switch banks! |

Or join a credit union. I've been with mine for...geez...almost 20 years now. I've always gotten great service (they did the re-fi on my condo - and they service the note locally, which is huge). And they don't nickel and dime me to death with fees. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

I work at a bank..and have been a teller for 5 years and this is my usual answer in my head ,"if you knew it wasnt there then why would you even process a transaction?
If a bank tells you that it takes a day for the check to clear from another bank ..why would a person go and spend it assuming just because it is in the current balance of their account, that their available balance (which is less than the check) is all free and clear to start spending??
If you deposit money from another source, the bank that you use requires by LAW that they collect from that other bank first. I have seen SO MANY instances where this happens, and then the hceck comes back bad. While sometimes it may not be at the fault of the person that deposited the check..they agreed to deal with the consenquences that their check provider put on them...which are the fees....if you do not have the funds to cover anything you spend DONT DO IT...its so simple. How you going to accidentally charge $6, knowing full and well you have $5?
Your bank card is not a credit line or a credit card, the bank does not give you anything you do not have..you cant just make up accidental money when it is not there. People know the penalties before they even do it...so you just going to have to say to yourself.."if I only have $3.00 and I go and spend $20.00...then the bank is going to charge me and I have to make that money back...".
What you need to do is set up your bank card or checking account with security, so that your check card cant do that. Working at a bank I guess, it is easy for me to check and know what my and others balances all the time...but some people just cant do that I understand...so I would suggest that you just put the auto-stop once your account gets too low to keep spending. um, all people aren't the same!!
how about people that grew up around and learned behavior from irresponsible adults?
how about people that aren't smart enough to do the right things on their own? what if they had just a little bit of counseling? is it their fault that they're stupid????
I'm not even saying I disagree with you wholeheartedly. I just don't think you can cast a large blanket like that over such a diverse group.

um, all people aren't the same!! Sorry...you're not going to put those words in my mouth. I never said all people were the same.
how about people that grew up around and learned behavior from irresponsible adults? So...blame Mommy and Daddy forever? They're grown-ups now - the decisions they make are their responsibility.
how about people that aren't smart enough to do the right things on their own? what if they had just a little bit of counseling? is it their fault that they're stupid???? Unlike you (apparently), I think most people are smart enough to do the right thing. The vast majority of people have adequate intelligence to know when they have (or don't have) enough money to pay for something.
I'm not even saying I disagree with you wholeheartedly. I just don't think you can cast a large blanket like that over such a diverse group. Again, I never said that. What I said was that, if people aren't responsible for their own money, it isn't anyone else's fault. You're the one who brought up all the side issues and what-ifs.

1 - damn, I wasn't putting words in your mouth, I was just answering!!!!
2 - no, don't blame forever, but if you don't know any better, are you just supposed to "get it" when you're 18? or 25? or 60? when exactly does this revelation appear on it's own? I personally think that there should be more programs available to help educate dumb people in areas like this. It can only help us ALL as a people.
3 - I would argue that it seems the vast majority of people YOU know (apparently) are smart enough. The billions of dollars that go to OD fees alone seems to point to a different landscape. Again though, that's just their fault.
4 - you have to bring up side issues and what-if's G, it's not a black/white statement.
why do we always have to argue?

At the end of the day, its your responsibility to manage your funds properly. Stop blaming it on the banks as that ain't their problem. If you have 5 bucks in your account, don't buy a 6 dollar cheeseburger. Plain and simple.
And you were right about one thing, people are different! The Have-Overdraft-Fees and the Havenots. |

There ARE programs that help people establish credit and get to know how to balance your account..it is called a BANK.
If you do not know how to use a bank, whos fault is that? Your knowledge of your own money is your problem, not the banks. The bank didnt spend your money..YOU did. We went home after the bank was closed on the weekend, what you did with your spare time is not our problem.
The billions of dollars that go in fees just goes to show that people..when having cash go crazy and buy more than what they can see...materialistic growth for themselves overlooking what they can actually spend. This IS just their fault. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Banks are evil, plain and simple. May not have started out that way, but hey - they birthed the Greed Factor. Banks and the gov't with their dayum 401 and RRSP's (Registered Retirement Savings Plan for Americans that don't know) are ca$hing in like they never anticipated (or maybe they did, which makes them even more evil).
With the economy on the skids...and getting worse daily (f*ck that sh*t about it getting better) and so many having to cash out their retirement saving$ before 60/65 - the penalty is wicked. For every $10K of your own hard earned $, they penalize you $1000 big ones; at least that's the going rate in Canada.
