BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Ronni Chasen will miss Hollywood's awards season — the time that was her specialty as a publicist and woman-about-town.

Instead, the late-night shooting that left her dead in her Mercedes on Sunset Boulevard has become a mystery straight out of one of the movies she promoted.

The prominent Beverly Hills publicist was gunned down in her Mercedes-Benz Tuesday after attending the premiere of the new Cher film "Burlesque," whose soundtrack she was pushing for an Oscar nomination, according to the trade publication Variety.

She also was working with 20th Century Fox on a supporting actor Oscar campaign for Michael Douglas in "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps," according to Allen Berry, a publicist for the actor.

Five shots? I've watched too many investigation stories, this sounds like a crime of passion.

I mean, I've seen stories of how some people will try to cover themselves before shooting someone. This seems like Ronnie had a fallout with someone and they took her out for some stupid reason. Sad.

This is sad, but I figured someone was really out to get her if she was shot 5 times in the chest. I mean one shot to the chest is usually enough to take someone out, but 5 times?! Either this was a "hit" or she really, really pissed off or hurt someone enough for them to want her dead.

Yeah but you know what they say? "Who would wanna harm her?" I heard she was an all-out nice woman though so I'm thinking it was a crime of passion more than anything. The shooter knew her.

Oh, most definitely. If the shooter's motive was maybe robbery or carjacking, he wouldn't have shot her 5 times. I don't think a stranger would should someone 5 times. There is clearly a personal element to this slaying. She might have been a very nice lady, but someone was very upset with her...

And for some stupid reason at that. I mean, really, if I make anyone mad, then that gives them the motivation to shoot me? My thing is if they find out who killed her, they may try to make it as if he or she was mentally unstable and was not able to function when they killed that person. I know too many investigation stories that end like that.

Sad.

But I bet the Randy Quaid conspiracy theorists are catching a second wind from this.

Yeah, this just seems like whoever shot her wanted to make sure she was dead. Now her entire life will be splayed out for the world to see when the investigation starts.

Crazy story. I guess she was a powerful person, maybe there is a The Player type of story going on, like she had made a promise to an up and coming writer, actor, etc, and that person blamed her for their failure?

i'm thinking jilted lover. five shots in the chest, near the heart.

That makes sense, too. When you read about a known "hit" the murder is usually very "tidy," with one bullet to the forehead or back of the head and no evidence left behind.
