Cowboys' Don Meredith dies after brain hemorrhage

The Associated Press

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Don Meredith, one of the most recognizable figures of the early Dallas Cowboys and an original member of ABC's "Monday Night Football" broadcast team, died Sunday. He was 72.

Meredith's wife, Susan, told The Associated Press on Monday her husband died in Santa Fe after suffering a brain hemorrhage and lapsing into a coma. She says a private graveside ceremony is being planned and that family members were traveling to Santa Fe.

What a guy. Played every home game of his life within 100 miles of Dallas. A legend at SMU.

My favorite Meredith story was on Monday Night Football one year, the Houston Oilers were getting blown out. As the camera panned the nearly-empty Astrodome, it focused on one good ol' boy who was apparently asleep in his seat.

But he wasn't. He looked up at the camera and flipped the bird. Meredith didn't miss a beat and said, "Look - he still thinks his team is number one!"
