Oprah On Her Relationship With Gayle: ‘I’m Not a Lesbian. Oprah On Her Relationship With Gayle: ‘I’m Not a Lesbian. An emotional Oprah Winfrey teared up as she spoke to Barabara Walters about her relationship with rumored lover Gayle King. “I have said we are not gay,” she tells Barbara Walters on “A Barbara Walters Special: Oprah, The Next Chapter,” airing Thursday on ABC. “I’m not lesbian. I’m not even kind of lesbian. And the reason it irritates me is because somebody must think I’m lying. That’s number one. Number two, why would you want to hide it? That’s not the way I run my life.” Oprah says that despite rarely being seen in public together, Stedman is still “the love… the lover… the man… the partner… the mate” of her life.
Somebody should tell Oprah that she can be in an intimate relationship with another woman and not engage in sexual acts with her.

Ricky never answered the question.. he just avoided it... he never said I'm Not Gay!!!

That's how I remember it. He never confirmed nor denied when asked that question, he would simply say he didn't want to answer it.
Though in regards to Oprah...

But does that make her a lesbian? I'm pretty sure I know a few women who are more intimate in every way other than sexual with their girlfriends than they are with their husbands or boyfriends, but I don't think any of them are lesbians.

While I've never been a big fan of O, if she was a lesbian she would be out and proud by now. What does the woman have to lose by staying in the closet? Not a damn thing. If she got any blow back she would just do a "These are my favorite things lesbian edition" and her audience would be back into her bosom. It sounds to me like she's known that for years. Somebody should tell that to the rest of the world. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

She's damned either way. People always find fault in others even if there is none. If she says nothing, she's gay. If she publicly denies it, she gay. It doesn't matter what she says because there's always still going to be the mob out there that wants to think they have something on her and will condemn her for what they think they know about her private life.
If she was a lesbian I would think she would have been outed by someone by now. Even if not, I don't see why she would lie: what does she have to gain or lose at this phase in her life. She has everything. She has endless riches, she has power. She steers her own ship without being at the mercy of bosses, in all forms of media...and she was able to amass all of this while admitting openly she used to smoke crack, was molested, and later sexually promiscuous...do you honestly think that after all the transparency she's shown over so many years, that at this stage in her life she would be afraid to be a (GASP!)
Where's the rationale in that?

and anyway it's always been quietly understood by people in music circles (and pretty much the entire city of Miami Beach) that Ricki is gay. He did have a girlfriend once that by all accounts he loved very much, but he also had boyfriends (I guess that actually makes him Bi); but in any event, he was always openly affectionate in public with his boyfriends and always introduced them as such to friends and business colleagues. No one in those those circles really gave a shiggity, so it was just a non-story.

You need to write a damn book Auntie Ottie! I'd preorder it! "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Also, how is Oprah's popularity in Germany? "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

They don't know of her. She used to air her show here in the 80's and early 90's, but they have no concept of who she is or what she is. She's only been mentioned briefly in the press because she was an Obama supporter, and even then they only know her as "USA Talklady Oprah Winfrey"...they essentially have no clue

I have a very close relationship like that with my best friend, I am not married. I see how a close friendship like this can develop. I think some people just have a hard time believing that a black woman that isn't classically pretty and sporting a darker hue will not or maybe shouldn't deserve the love and loyalty that Stedman (a "pretty" guy) gives Oprah.
I know of a few women that are spoken badly about because other women say, "He's too good looking for her, what does he see in that?" It's just a mean thing to say. I swear if Oprah looked like Halley Berry we wouldn't be having this conversation. Stedman would be so lucky to be able to sniff that when he could. But she's black and ugly... she must be gay! We all know Stead doesn't hit that!
I don't think she is, and besides.. like others have mentioned, she has nothing to lose in saying so. We as a whole can be such very harsh critics towards women in general.

How about "friend" ?
Are true friendships that rare that we must assume that Oprah's and Gayle's friendship is based on sexual attraction?

well of course she is not a lesbian... she is bisexual
imagine me on her couch while she is here in oz i bet there'll b lots of goodies under my chair
why should she tell anyone anyway...it's her private life

Exactly.
There's a woman I have been dear, dear friends with for over 20 years. We have been through some amazing times (good and bad) together - and have always been there for each other. But the relationship has never been sexual.
If Barbara Walters got me talking about our friendship, I'd probably cry, too. I simply can't imagine my life without this person. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Good point. From the number of raised eyebrows about whether "friendship" really cuts it in this case, and whispers that it must be 'something more', it would appear so, sadly.
Maybe we just can't imagine a relationship where there's intimacy without sex. A strange quirk of our highly sexualised culture, perhaps, that although we see the physical side of relationships everywhere (endless celebrity sex tapes and crotch shots; hardcore porn always a few mouse clicks away, etc), intimacy has been so consistently elbowed out of the picture, we can only see it as something that's essentially just a supplement to fucking.
