E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (spoilers) OMG! I am a 40 year old man, who has loved this movie since it was released and I was 12 years old. I decided to put it on tonight, and watch it....I don't know if I am getting old and weak or what; I used to never cry at movies....maybe a weepy eye at most. But tonight, I opened up like a faucet. First when E.T. is dying/dies and then, when E.T. goes home.
Dang that John Williams....the music that kicks in when E.T. walks up to Elliot in the end, before he boards the space ship, made me start sobbing like a little girl. And then its just over when E.T. says, "I'll be right here."
Like I said, this movie has always had a very special place in my heart. I interpret different everytime I seriously sit down to watch it, and tonight it got me to thinking about my parents. They are still here, but I got to thinking about how people special to you, forever live in your mind and your heart. This movie runs my whole gammet of emotions....wonder, magic, excitement, sadness, inspiration, and straight up beauty. Anyone else get this worked up over E.T.?
p.s. If you have never seen E.T., please watch the original theatrical release, not the 2002 special edition. "this is where the PURPLE PARTY PEOPLE be"

I usually bawl my eyes out at the beginning when he gets left behind on earth, but that's because I know all the shit that will happen to him

Did you ever take the ET ride at Universal? I did. It starts out on bikes and yes you take off and drive over the cop car and into the night among the trees, then space back to ET's planet.

zombiekitten, never thought about that, just always sad that he was left and was scared...but you're right.
kewlschool, no, never made it to Universal, but that sounds cool. It would probably make me feel 12 again. And that's cool that you go over the cop car... "this is where the PURPLE PARTY PEOPLE be"

he spends the rest of his time trying to get back home, it was nice he made a friend and everything, but he didn't belong here. Can you imagine how afraid he must have been
I know he was an adult, but still. Abandonment in movies really gets to me. A.I. has me sobbing.

oh, yeah, A.I. ....that's some serious shit. When he spends all those countless years frozen until he reaches the future and the future life beings offer him the artificial comfort of his mother and then put them to sleep....that is some dark, yet some poetic stuff right there....you can definately see the Kubrick/Speilberg thing goin' on. I cry when she leaves him in the forest most

I was 12 when it came out and it was the first movie I can remember crying at. I haven't seen it in years.

true, that is sad...and the rest of the film is a reminder that the mother in his robotic mind is not the mother he believes he is waiting for, which makes it more sad, but what I think is neat is that the future beings are not cold and technical, but are understanding and compassionate and do the right thing to send him into the happy, fulfilled place he needs to be. Trust me, it is still the wonderful and touching film it was 28 years ago. It is worth a re-watch. "this is where the PURPLE PARTY PEOPLE be"

That movie scared the shit outta me as a kid.
The scene whne Elliot throws the baseball in the shed then runs away...
Then you see nothing but ETs gangly hands on the edge of the shed...and his heavy breathing...
I wanted to go home!!!!
Saw it that one time at the theater and never again!!!!

This was the only movie I have ever seen in which the entire audience got up out of there seats (a huge theater filled up) to clap. It was when all the bikes flew at the end.
Such a great movie! My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I loved A.I. too - it's just like a futuristic take on Pinicchio. Wonderful, underrated film, wish it was out on Blu-Ray. Talking of Blu-Ray, I hear E.T. The Extra Terrestrial will be released on Blu Ray in 2011.

I remember seeing A.I. and being sad days after "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Same here. I was upset for days after watching A.I. I brought it on DVD but can't bring myself to watch it again.

My kids recently watched E.T. They loved it. I think it will be one of their faves.
