I was a manly man today

My daughter and I took a three-hour horseback ride through the snow-covered mountains of Angel Fire, New Mexico.

It was much more fun than I thought. The high temp was 28, and the wind was howling, but we were dressed properly. I've found that I can withstand temps as low as 0 if I'm dressed properly.

We rode for about 1.5 hours and came to a tent, where the cowboys had a stove inside, warming up some water for hot chocolate, and some cowboy coffee. We hung out there almost an hour, mainly because it took 30 minutes for the coffee to percolate.

Then on the way back to base camp, I rescued a 12-year-old girl from certain death due to exposure. Well, I grabbed her hat, which had fallen off. Swiped it right off the back of her saddle, just like John Wayne would have done, and gave it back to her.

When we got back to camp, I knew my non-four-wheel drive Suburban was going to have problems getting out of the unprepared parking area. And sure enough, we got stuck. But through manly use of the reverse and forward gears, I was able to fishtail my way out of the lot without even hitting anything else. At one point we were moving 90 degrees sideways, which I enjoyed but my daughter did not. I told her, "This is how Phil Bennett spends most of his life, going sideways! But at a much higher rate of speed, and on only two wheels!" And she said, "Who is Phil Bennett?"

Also, I didn't shave today!

Coffee made by cowboys?

LOL, no, actual cowboy coffee is made with coffee grounds and hot water, boiled in a pot over an open flame. This was just coffee made in a percolater, which was coffee grounds placed in a a jar of hot water and filtered (I hope), and set on top of a hot stove.

My use of forward and reverse gears is deemed "manly" because I punctuated each shift with a four letter word that rhymes with "misfit". Except when we were going sideways - I was yelling "Wooohoooo!!!!"

For the horse part or the not shaving part?

And I have to be 100% completely honest - I was on a mule, not a horse. But my mule was as big as any of the horses!

Well, I have to leave now. Our dinner guests are here and I'm going to enjoy a nice Mandarin Orange Cosmopolitan or two.

Coming from a published author, that is high praise indeed!

I think my new motto will be "Life is much more fun sideways".
