I bought the book back in 1990 and could't get past the first chapter. I just didn't understand what the hell was going on. I put it down and never got back to it. I couldn't understand what all the hype was about. I remember discussing it with some friends of mine, and one of them said this, which cracked me up:

"I can't read Toni Morrison. That bitch on drugs."

I did see the movie and then got a better understanding of what the hell it was about.

I had tried reading the book on several occasions, and was never able to get through it (...couldn't figure out for the life of me what the Hell was going on, lol). When I saw the movie, suddenly the story made sense to me and I was able to go back and make it all the way through the book. I've actually read the book several times since then. So I appreciate the movie the that reason, and for... DANNY GLOVERS' ASS razz .
