Nat King Cole's Mona Lisa.
Now this is where my as really feels old! The UK DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A POP 40 CHART IN THE YEAR I WAS BORN!
Incidentally, every one of every poster's songs, I was grown by the time those songs came out! Yeah, yeah, I'm old enough to be all y'alls grandmama! [Edited 11/22/10 6:42am]

GURRLLL! I remember the very first day I heard that song!!! I was a freshman at Howard. Me and my suite mate Rosalind (from Danville, VA) were going to get something to eat. We were walking across 4th Street to go to the "Kampus Karryout" to get 2 half smokes. A guy pulls up in a car and starts chatting. Rosalind knew him so he offered to take us to a little get together off campus. Since Rosalind knew him, I went along. Soon as we stepped into the car that song came on the radio. I said, "Oh, I like that! Who is that singing?"
One more milestone happened to me that day. When we got to the "get together," there were about 6 people there. All of them were sitting in a circle on the floor. Ros and I joined the circle. Someone handed me a roach. I took it and simply passed it. Everybody got quiet. A few minutes later Ros said we had to leave. When we got back to the dorm, Rosalind is in a tizzy. "Oh, Trish! Oh, Trish! I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry! I didn't know! Oh lawd, I'm so sorry!" I'm like, "What's wrong? You don't need to apologize to me. You didn't do anything wrong!" Rosalind, "I didn't know you don't smoke! Oh, I was so embarrassed!" Me, "Why embarrassed? Did I do something stupid?" Rosalind, "Well, no. It's just that they thought you were a cop!"
Havne't seen Rosalind in 30 years, but if she only knew...

Isn't it funny how a song can totally take you back to a specific moment/event in time??? I was thinking about that this weekend when I heard Roger's "I Wanna Be Your Man" which transports me to a day in high school when Malfred Duncan BMOC sang that to me between classes and gave me a teddy bear with his name on it.

Oh, you had a man serenade you, too? I remember the time I had just started dating this guy I met at a party. He told me he used to sing in the high school talent shows, etc. And coincidentally, there was a girl in my office who was in his class during those HS years. When I told her I had met him, she said, "Oh, girl. Tyrone can sing his ass off!" Anyway, we were at his apartment one evening. I was just sitting on the couch. I think I was waiting on him to get ready because we were going out. Chile, all of a sudden this man started singing to me. I mean BLOWING, chile! I sat there with my mouth agape the whole time, I was fucking floored! The song was one he had written himself, as he used to dabble in songwriting and production. That was over 30 years ago, but one thing I remember about that song. It was entitled "Diamonds and Pearls." I SHIT YOU NOT! And no, it was not Prince's. Hell, Prince was prolly just getting out of high school at that time!

I couln't get out of 'em fast enough!
It's funny. He's been on my mind. I haven't seen him since we stopped seeing each other back in the early 80's. I Googled his name and found out where he was working. I've been toying with the idea of calling him, but I don't know... I know I broke his heart. He asked me to marry him and I said no.

US - "The Candy Man," by Sammy Davis Jr. UK - "Metal Guru," by T. Rex AUS - Friggin' "Amazing Grace," by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guard ...I would say something disparaging about Aussies here, but I actually own this song. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
