I don't get Facebook. Convince me otherwise. I've got email (to those i want to give my email address), i have a phone, and pretty much anyone can contact me generally anyway on any forums i visit. I'm always asked if i'm on it. I don't get the appeal and have managed to continue living without. I see people on every break they get at work obsessed with this damn thing, i think it's pretty sad.
Maybe it's an age thing as i've just passed 40, but honestly I just don't get the appeal.

I am on Facebook maybe once a day for a few minutes to catch up with friends who live far away and I do enjoy that aspect of it, but I wouldn't cry if I couldn't use Facebook anymore, either.
I am more confused by society's obsession with texting. I dont' get THAT one at ALL. I see comments on Facebook where people will comment back and forth a couple times and then one will say "Text me right now!" Huh? You're already commenting back and forth on FB. Why is texting more convenient than what you're already doing? Or why not use chat or instant messenger? Or why not ACTUALLY CALL EACH OTHER? There's an old fashioned idea.
I realize texting can be useful and appropriate in certain situations, but people will text text text, back and forth multiple times, having what amounts to a conversation....and if one has the time to do that, why not just pick up the damn phone and speak directly to one another?

Oh yes, I certainly can understand the appeal of social networks, specially Facebook...I just don't want to be part of it... ![]()

I love Facebook. I have reconnected with many childhood friends, cousins in other states, etc. It's a great way to keep in touch. I've also made a few new friends who are good for a laugh! Facebook is very addicting

To the OP, if you don't get the appeal, then there is not much point in trying to convince you otherwise. Works for some....not for others.

What else should I do with my time? Raise the kid, talk to the family, and work a full-time job? ![]()

Hell, I prefer real people in real environments...you know, the smell of perfume, the sight of a cleavage, an interesting conversation in a cosy tea shop...

double co sign. When i don't have the time to connect with fam out of state i can chat with them on Facebook or via email on Facebook. Good way to catch up with friends from high school as well as former co workers. I don't obsess over it as well and would never use at work. [Edited 11/21/10 17:37pm] Don't laugh at my funk

facebook has replaced my email as my main social interaction with friends, and some family. It's easier to share things and talk to one another, email just seems so old to me.

It's kind of like going to the mall for kids, going to a bar or party for some adults, and going to family get togethers for some family members... and also a way of talking or catching up without actually being on the phone and talking. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Yeah, I think connections over an expanse of time and geography are the real selling points.
I do think Facebook is overrated. There's no reason to be on it for hours a day. [Edited 11/21/10 20:23pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

It makes it a lot easier to keep up with my theatre contacts. Most of the groups I work with are on Facebook, so I only need to check one place to find out about auditions and performances, see what shows my friends are doing and when they open, and invite friends to the shows I'm in.
That all used to be a lot more difficult. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I have a disdain for Facebook (though I have one). I only log on to see if I get messages or if I'm "poked" (which I still think it's kinda risquely dumb lol).

I don't use either facebook or myspace but would if I was more sociable. I know some who use it to see what their family is up to and post daily thoughts, just one post on their wall and all their friends get their daily thought. Or some who use it to network.
Sounds easy, but it's not my cup of tea.

You don't need to be convinced, if you don't like it, you don't like it.
And no, I don't get it either, just another "over kill" method that I could do without.

I enjoy it on a personal level (reconnecting with old friends I never thought I'd be in contact with again) but it's proven a priceless (literally since it's free) business tool for me.

Geez, whats there not to get about FB? Its Twitter thats the more complex animal. lol
FB helps me to stay connected to friends that maybe arent as accessible otherwise...and some that are. You get the picture? Its a one stop meeting place for people ive known since kindergarten, new friends that Ive only known for a few weeks, and even people who Ive never met in person but have somethings in common with. Its 31 flavors of AWESOME! [Edited 11/21/10 21:20pm]

I'm too private of a person to enjoy Facebook. Tried it, didn't like it much. People can call, text, or email if they wanna hear from me. If not, no big deal

It's a nice way to keep in touch with people I don't get to see very often. I tend to log in for 5 minutes here and there to see what's going on. I like it.
I heard recently that next year they're going to make some changes to Facebook... I can't remember exactly what the changes will be, but I think they're going to add e-maill and stuff.

I do not use it to "poke" or play stupid games, or answer stupid quizzes. That's all useless. It really is useful for communication, more so than email and IM.
