Brownbaggers

So, do you take your lunch to work? (I do, most days.) Do you have a strategy? What kinds of things do you take for lunch?

I don't mind eating the same thing for several days running, so I usually make a batch of something on Sunday, divvy it into four portions, and eat it Monday through Thursday. (I buy a salad or something on Friday.)

This week, I have zucchini and meatballs. drool I'm thinking about gumbo for next week. hmmm

Actually, I guess I double-bag - since I usually take breakfast to work, too! lol

For a loooong time I was a brown-bagger.

Then I got so sick & tires of sandwiches that I stopped.

Now I am sick of fast-food, (which isn't as cheap as it used to be), and going BROKE paying for deli food every day.

So I'm brown-bagging again. Got some Oscar Meyer "Mesquite" flavored turkey cold cut meat with swiss cheese slices and whole grain white bread. By the end of the week, I'll be ready for something else.

Yes, me too. I am trying to spend less money, so I cook a bunch on Sunday and freeze as many portions as I can.

If I keep up the cooking, then I have a selection to choose from during the week.

I also make my breakfast ahead of time in the form of home made granola bars. I make a batch and eat them for the week.

But my cooking repertiore is a tad limited, so I get pretty bored of what I make.

Rarely. I tend to eat one big meal a day during the week, which is lunch . It's hard cooking for just one. I love to eat, so since it's just me, I will got out to lunch and treat myself to a full meal if I'm really hungry. Since I work at a university, there are several places to eat on campus from just sandwiches and chips to a sit down restaurant with china and flatware. That's what I did today and had chicken marsala, rice and gravy, French string beans, roll/butter, iced tea and two pieces of black forest cake (to take home and eat later this evening).

When I'm low on cash and want to be a bit frugal, I will make 4 quarts of home made "gravy" or spaghetti sauce and eat that until it's gone. It's so good I can eat it for 3 days straight!

When I have the opportunity I try to take something for breakfast and lunch, or at least one of them. I definitely have no problem taking leftovers multiple days. I'll make things specifically for that purpose, too, like banana bread, bran muffins, lasagna. But honestly, more often than not, one of those meals (at work or at home) is nothing but fruit or fruit juice (Odwalla or Naked). Also, I tend to work right through lunch quite a bit. Which means lunch becomes another cup of coffee. lol

I generally work through lunch, too - but I try to eat something.

Otherwise, I can get a little cranky. [img:$uid]http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g216/rebecca8273/emoticon/eusa_shifty.gif[/img:$uid]

Yeah, hard to believe, I know. lol

That was one of the first lessons Sweetie learned. If Genesia starts to get cranky or weepy, she's either hungry or tired. Feed her, first - and see if that works. (I've been hypoglycemic since I was a teenager.) If it doesn't, put her to bed, cuz she's done.

I'll never forget one time, we went out to LA for the Rose Bowl. I'd spent the three days before we left moving to a new place, then we flew all day and went straight to the Santa Monica pier to meet some friends. I'd barely eaten all day, and the people we were meeting couldn't make up their damn minds about where to go for dinner.

Sweetie looked at me, saw I was about five minutes from a full meltdown, and said to the friends, "I have to feed this one now. We'll catch up with you later." He hauled me into the first restaurant we saw and got some food in me (I don't even remember where or what we ate). We saw our friends briefly after that, and then went back to the hotel, where he put me straight to bed.

I was fine the next day.

Poor Sweetie. He had no idea he was dealing with a three-year-old. disbelief

Before I read that, I was going to ask you if you suffered from that. Well, that explains it! lol

Seriously, I used to work with a woman who was hypoglycemic. If she didn't eat by Noon, she turned into a full scale Tazmanian devil! demon One day she flicked and I kinda jumped in her shit. Later she came back and apologized and explained to me why she blew up. After that happened, I forgave her and would watch her. If I saw she was inching toward Noon and hadn't gone to lunch, I would remind her, "Marla! Feed the demon!!"

Yeah, it's bad sometimes. Alcohol and caffeine make it even worse - so going out for drinks without having a plan for dinner is just about the worst thing I can do.

I had a couple of very bad episodes (like, screaming, crying, threatening to jump out a window bad) when I was in college. It got so my roommate would hide "emergency" food in our room so she could feed me if I was in trouble and the sorority house kitchen was closed.

It's nice of you to keep tabs on your co-worker. That shit can sneak up on you before you know it. disbelief

No. I am not organized nor do I get up early enough to make lunch in the morning before work; and I guess I'm just too lazy to do it the night before. I have tried in the past to bring my lunch; usually when that happened, lunchtime would roll around and I wouldn't be in the mood to eat what I'd brought. I skip lunch probably 3 out of 5 days a week and on the days I do buy lunch it's $10 or less (which is relatively inexpensive in NYC) so that's an expense I'm willing (and able) to live with. shrug

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

It almost took out my daddy. My brother was talking to him on the phone and Daddy just didn't sound right. He was confused, slurring his words, etc. At the time, my dad was in New Jersey and my brother was at home in Maryland. He told Daddy to hang up and my brother called my mother (parents are divorced) and told her to rush to Daddy's apartment to check on him. She got there and he was in bed. She though he was asleep. My brother got there about 2 hours later and tried to wake Daddy. He was UNCONSCIOUS. Mike immediately called 911. They got there in 3 minutes, seemed to know immediately what was wrong and got Daddy on the stretcher and to the hospital in record time. When he got to the hospital, his glucose level was 10! Docs told us if it had been any later, Daddy would have died then. As it was, he died 2 months later.

That's awful about your dad. sad

Actually, the hypoglycemia is one of the reasons I got so finicky about my diet - and why I nearly always carry breakfast and lunch to work. I find that a low carb, high protein, fairly high fat diet keeps my blood sugar stable. Since I can't count on the corporate cafeteria having the right kinds of foods for me (they still peddle that high-carb, low-fat BS rolleyes ), it's just better for me to handle it, myself.
