I think Marvel Comics is planning to end the Ultimate Universe before 2011, but I could be wrong.

All I know that in the (regular) Marvel Universe, Jean Grey is THE only X-Men that is "dead" for the moment.

Jean dosn't count (i have not read a comic in years-since magneto pulled wolverine's adamantium out)

When I said Jean is "dead", I'm taking in consideration that The Phoenix can definitely rise again in the Marvel Universe.

And BTW, it's the Ultimate Universe's Wolverine that is dead, not the one from the Marvel Universe.

Jean is dead. So is Nightcrawler, who died during an assault on Utopia by Nimrod/Bastion in an attempt to kill the first born mutant since M-Day.

And actually, a SHIT LOAD of Mutants are dead or no longer mutants as of House of M.

Wolverine currently is in a weird story arc where his actual Soul is in an actual Hell while the Devil inhabits his body. Meanwhile, he's still showing up all normal in New Avengers, Chaos War, and a bunch of other titles. LOL

But yeah, Nightcrawler is dead too.

Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another

Eh, it's the "Ultimate" universe, which is the Marvel equivilant of "Earth 2". It isn't the Marvel Universe proper, and they've been doing a whole lot of killing off/destroying/revamping the UMU for a while now. Lost interest a long time ago!

Basically, since Quesada took over as EIC, Marvel has been in a steady decline. Even the "actual" Marvel U has had some truly dumb things occuring in it (Daredevil gets possessed and becomes a villian! Spidey and MJ had their marriage retconned...by making a deal with the devil!). I sometimes think Quesada is actually TRYING to destroy Marvel completely. Maybe he's secretly on DC's payroll? wink

DC Comics is having it's biggest success ever because of The Blackest Night storyline and it's aftermath, The Brightest Day. These stories were bigger sells than Marval's Dark Reign storyline, hands down.

I wonder if the ultimate titles did not grow directly out of the What If.. series. those were cool. Like Conan in the 20th century.

I think The Incredible Hulk "jumped the shark" a lot sooner when Marvel Universe's Illuminati (a cult founded by Tony Stark/Iron Man) successfully trapped Dr. Bruce Banner in a rocket ship and shot him to space. THIS was the set-up for the Planet Hulk AND World War Hulk storylines.

^^ lol But none of the above complaints matter. They'll just reboot, or combine, or tell new origin stories, or kill characters so they can be "reborn" again. So obnoxious. It's nothing against anybody posting in this thread (I'm glad to know there are other comic book readers here), but I haven't understood the appeal of these books for over twenty years. Damn, almost thirty, actually. They insult their readers far too often for me to take them seriously.

30 years ago, Barbara Gordon was still Batgirl & Richard "Dick" Grayson was a young man still bearing the Robin mantle. But that's another topic for another thread.

I think the whole foolishness of super-heroes returning from the death started the moment DC Comics tried (and failed!) to clean up it's own history with the Crisis Of Infinite Earths storyline. Supergirl was killed in battle, yet the writers of DC Comics throughout the years since have kept on inventing new female characters that beared the Supergirl mantle. disbelief lol

Crisis was a horrible, awful series. But Marvel was doing its even-worse Secret Wars series at the same time (actually a little earlier). The move to "event" series and issues is what ruined comics from the Big Two for me. Events overtook the desire to tell good stories in mainstream superhero books. On the other hand, the mid-'80s gave birth to some of the most exciting and diverse aspects of comics too. There are still plenty of good comics out there; but my expectations for mainstream superhero fare are really low.

I don't disagree with your statement about how "event" style writing has been an issue with Marvel/DC. However, it was the Infinity Gauntlet event that really hooked me back into comics. And actually, I really thought Planet Hulk was a very good arc. The Dark Reign era had a lot of high points for me too.

In DC, I really enjoyed Blackest Night much more than I thought I would. And once I was able to start to comprehend Final Crisis, I really got into that as well.

Those are also way better STORIES, in general. Blackest Night and Brightest Day are just good, solid stories, and they don't seem engineered just to have a big event. There is actually some meat on the bones of the story. Marvel's Dark Reign, Siege and Shadowland arcs aren't even skeletal remains of a story...just some bits and pieces they tried to assemble out of mud!

When I was a kid, all I read was Marvel, rarely picking up a DC book. Nowadays, it's the exact opposite. DC has a cohesive universe, and it seems like the writers actually care about the stories they are telling. Quesada just continues to find new ways to crap on the Marvel Universe.
