Hollywood's Time Warp Continues: 'Dallas' 2011

TNT is currently negotiating deals with veteran 'Dallas' stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray to head down south in early February to join a cast of hot, younger Ewings for a continuation of the 1978-91 primetime soap. And a lot has changed since we last visited with the Ewings in CBS's 1996 and 1998 reunion movies. For starters, Miss Ellie and Clayton are dead and buried on the ranch, reflecting the real-life losses of Howard Keel and Barbara Bel Geddes, and Bobby Ewing (Duffy) is remarried. But J.R. is still scheming and Sue Ellen has remained a powerful confidant and sober mother to all grown-up John Ross.

Ever the money man, Larry tells me he's still waiting for the bucks to be put on the table before he signs on. "I read the script and liked it," says Larry. "A lot of it is exposition to explain what's happened since we went off in the '90s. Miss Ellie's passed on and such. But they haven't made a firm offer yet. We're kicking ideas around, but nothing's been struck in gold. We'll see how it goes; I'm still ambivalent about it."

Far more optimistic are Patrick and Linda. "I read the script and was extremely impressed with it," says Patrick, who has heard shooting will take place in Texas, Louisiana or New Mexico. "I'd managed to read the scripts for the feature films Fox was planning a few years ago and they were atrocious. Just awful, so I didn't know what to expect from TNT. But this read like one of the better episodes at the height of 'Dallas.' It's a perfect sequel to continuing the 'Dallas' tradition."

Linda's been assured by the new show's writer, Cynthia Cidre, that Sue Ellen will remain the strong woman she evolved into by the original's conclusion. "I don't want Sue Ellen to become a victim yet again," Linda says.

As for the plot, Patrick tells me, "It's carried by John Ross, Christopher [Bobby and Pam's son] and their group, but they put us in enough to carry our old fans with us. J.R. responds to business deals" just as he always did, J.R. and Bobby's acrimonious relationship continues, and "Bobby's married happily — and not to Pamela."

While Patrick says he'd love to see Bobby one day reunited with Victoria Principal's Pam, TNT shouldn't even think about getting Sue Ellen and J.R. back together. Cracks Linda: "If they try that, there might be another shooting!"

Not sure how I feel about this. But I loved the original and I live about 10 minutes from Southfork so it would be cool if they shot there again. I dunno, is there not one, single ORIGINAL idea in Hollywood anymore??? Hell they should just revive Dynasty and The Colbys while they're at it. confused

I used to live near Southfork, too! I just sold my house in May and moved in to central Dallas.

I definitely think they should film at Southfork. Dallas (the city) has seen an increase in the number of TV shows that are being filmed here.

As far as original Hollywood ideas....I agree with you, SCNDLS, they are few and far between. But...Dallas was a hit back in the days and if well-written, could be interesting again. I loved the new versions of the Charlie's Angels movies. I tried getting into the new Hawaii 5-0, but it doesn't keep my attention. And I think I'm a little too old to even see if the new 90210 is even interesting. I guess it all depends on the script-writers and the actors!

highfive

They film(ed) TONS of shows in Dallas including Prison Break and The Deep End. I loved running into Mehcad Brooks (Eggs) and Billy Zane in random joints in town.

I watched "Hawaii 5-0" last night. Well, I watched about 20 minutes of it.

That was all I could stand.

Horrible acting. Horrible direction. Horrible writing. Horrible cars. Horrible everything.

I would have never, ever believed this, but that show made David Caruso's laugher-of-a-sitcom look good.

As long as Hollywood is going to get lazy and remake old TV series (Battlestar Galactica, Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, 90210, Melrose Place, Hawaii 5-O, Parenthood, Human Target), why don't they just go ahead and do the ultimate remake....MANIMAL!

What a coincidence. I just received my DVDs I ordered (Dallas: Seasons 1-3 and Knot's Landing: Seasons 1 & 2). I have been enjoying the hell out of them since last weekend when I got them. Those were some evil whores just like me. lol

Anyway, I doubt a new "Dallas" would be any good. Everything they have remade or brought back to life has been absolutely horrible. The "Charlie's Angels" movies were a disgrace to the old series, the new "Bionic Woman" a few years ago was horrible. I didn't even watch "The Dukes Of Hazzard" movie and I sure as hell wasn't going to watch them ruin "Miami Vice". The only remake I liked was "The Brady Bunch Movie" they did in the 1990s.

I'd rather TV and movies just come up with original ideas for new shows altogether (actual shows...NOT reality shows). It just seems like TV and movies today, just like music, have no original ideas of their own.

Go to one of the third party vendors within Amazon. They are much cheaper. Amazon takes responsibility for them when they mess up. I only had one incident with one of the vendors over the years and Amazon made them refund my money.

I got mine for about $15 to $20 each where Amazon wanted $30. I got that first season of Knot's Landing for only $5 through one of the vendors.

Yeah me too. Just like the "90210" series. That show should be in a trash can compared to it's original predecesor.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
