Why would a Kindle speed up your reading?

And, no, I don't have one. But they seem pretty cool.

I love the whole aesthetic of books, ergo kindles are a ghastly invention. In this regard, i will stoically remain an anachronism all my days.

I've considered it now that I'm taking college courses. Having all your textbooks on one device would be convenient, plus having a search function would be nice to locate specific subjects, lines, etc. in the text.

I get people liking the whole feel of a book though. Books put me to sleep. As much as I would love to be an avid reader, it takes me forever to finish a book because I always doze off.

Ron LOVES it. Only gripe (he went back to reading from Kindle on iphone until he does an ipad) is that the Kindle isn't backlit.

That I understand, and for travelling purposes too.

I'm a very slow reader.

This sounds dumb, but when I read a book I get caught up on all the other words on the page sorrounding the section I'm reading and I start to feel overwhelmed (like I'll never get through that page). This ends up slowing me down and often, I get frustrated and will end up not finishing a book.

On the Kindle I can read small sections at a time (like just a few paragraphs on the page) and I can read way better and more efficiently.

This is my complaint too. Enough people have complained about it not being backlit that I don't understand why they won't just do it. It's total stubbornness on their part.

I do kindle on ipod touch, but the price of a Kindle is so good now I may give in next year. Never thought I would love e-reading so much. Now I look at regular books like"what is this paper shit?". Even at the library. Plus I have gotten so many free kindle books it's unreal! Good ones too!!! When you are a voracious reader yet unemployed it can get ugly. Thanks to Amazon I stayed reading and have some new faves.

I do like reading on the touch because it's so portable, even over the kindle.

Ahhh! OK. I have a similar sort of distraction. I never considered something like a Kindle might help. Very cool.

they seem pretty cool, but they also seem kind of limited compared to an iPad. I am not sure I can justify (for myself) getting a gadget that only does one thing.

PLus, I tend to buy used books for fiction. I rarely get new novels, so I imagine it would end up costing me more money in the end.

Plus there is the backlight issue, which I did not even know about until now!!

from what ive read and seen....i'm not sure you need a backlight...?

from the Amazon website...

Read in Bright Sunlight
Unlike LCD screens, Kindle's screen reads like real paper, with no glare. Read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room.

I know they tried to make the screen less like a computer and more like paper, and I can appreciate that because I hate reading stuff on the computer screen. Plus supposedly there's no glare. But if it's like a book, then that means you need a light to read it if you're in a dark room.

I wouldn't want the backlight for daytime reading. It's really just at night; it'd be nice to be able to read without having a light on, in case someone next to you is sleeping. Or if you were reading somewhere and the light changed, or if you were on a redeye flight, etc. I can see why a lot of people wouldn't think it was essential, but it would be nice.

Ron has a light on his. I'm not trying to discourage you from getting one, but trust me, backlit is way better than having the light attachment over it. I read the iphone Kindle in daylight and it's fine. Backlit option is still something they should is definitely get. "Reads like paper" sounds nice and romantic, it wears off and you'll be saying to yourself...so the fuck what? Didn't I buy this cuz it's not paper??? neutral

As far as the kindle not being backlit Amazons argument is that it's far less strain than reading an LCD screen for longer periods and uses much less power so less recharging. It doesn't glare so you can read in sunlight and is meant to provide a clearer text image that LCD.

I've got a Kindle 3G sitting in my cart on Amazon and just weighing it up whether to purchase or not with a cover with the light or without the light and what colour cover or whether I just want to get the wifi version. The 3G gives you unlimited browser access for the lifetime of the kindle in over a 100 countries. There are over a million free books available. I figure I'll read through a bunch of classics that I've never got around to. Not lugging around a stack of books is great, especially when travelling. It plays mp3. It's much lighter to handle now as well.

Yes.

I downloaded about 50 classics to my kindle for pc app in about 15 minutes the other day, there are thousands of free books available.

I took the plunge and ordered the 6" 3G one with the black leather cover and inbuilt light. Can't wait to get it!
