qantas are pretty miserly confused

here is what they got for a domestic flight where folks were INJURED

http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._Flight_72

In the aftermath of the accident, Qantas offered compensation to all passengers. The airline announced it would refund the cost of all travel on their itineraries covering the accident flight, offer a voucher equivalent to a return trip to London applicable to their class of travel and pay for medical expenses arising from the accident. Further compensation claims would be considered on case by case basis,[29] with several passengers from the flight pursuing legal action against Qantas. Some have asserted that they were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the incident and some have questioned Qantas' handling of their cases.

Well...technically, they should replace the engine with a new one that's in better condition, so you should actually be safer...

Look, I was standing under that plane: I can't see myself in the crowd but I was there taking shelter under the wing when it was bucketing down on that very day.

Jeez. That sounds about right, though.

This thread brings up memories of a few years back and a similar thing happening here. I live about 1/4 mile from the MSP airport and I was outside mowing the lawn one day when I heard a huge explosion. I looked up and saw a 747 with its right engine on fire and obviously struggling to keep above the tree tops. It was really loud, even over my mower's engine and it scared the hell out of me. I was positive it was going to crash. So I ran inside and called 911 - of course, they were already notified via the airport's response team to be prepared.

They were able to circle around and dump fuel for landing, but I heard from a friend who worked at the airline (Northwest) that the pilots were barely able to keep it in the air. What made it so bad was that it was on take-off and climbing with full power, which is the worst time to lose an engine.

I was on the ground and shitting my pants. I can't imagine being on board.

noooooooooo shake

UGH I can't imagine!!!!

I've had a jumbo fly very low over our place, on its way back to the airport (we live 45 minutes drive away) after having dumped all fuel out over the bay. Just THAT freaked me out. I could see stuff coming out of the plane, and we live quiet close to the beach so it must have been fuel eek I freaked out of course.

I cry when I see the concorde footage, so awful cry

It must have been pretty scary, but I heard the audio of the pilot speaking to the passengers just after it happened and he sounded very calm and relaxed about it.

It just goes to show how amazing those planes are. Even with 2 engines down, they can carry on.
