The Walking Dead

Anybody else excited about this new AMC series? I'm a huge fan of the comic and I'm wondering how closely they'll hew to the source material. If they do it right (and the preview makes it look like they did), this is going to be good.

I wonder how much of the shit from the book they can even get away with.

That book is fucking brutal. I've put it down and said "fuck you, Kirkman" a few times.

Me too. But I'll say this for Kirkman: That guy does not waste time. There are storylines in his books that other comics writers would take months or even years to let unfold, and he dispenses with them quickly. He definitely keeps things moving.

Yeah, it's never been very scary to me. (Zombies in general don't seem very scary.) The comic has always been about the struggle of what it means to be human in a world like this. It's more a drama about human nature and how real humans can be the scary ones.

I only learned of this project last night when I saw trailers during my wife's forcing me to watch Friday the 13th Part IV. confused

The EFX look incredible, and zombie flicks -- strangely -- always set up an environment for good human relationship stories.

I don't know if I have the tolerance for the gruesome anymore (I'm getting old), but the project does looks interesting.

I'm definitely in on this.

AMC's productions have been nothing short of stellar lately (Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Rubicon), so I'm pretty sure they're doing their best with this show too.

"what's that book where they're all behind the wardrobe?"

The only thing scary about zombie-related horror films/shows is when the zombies are eating humans.

exactly; zombie films trick the viewer into thinking the human character is gonna escape until she/he's hopelessly surrounded and the detailed gorefest begins nod shake

No, no. You guys are missin it.

In normal zombie fare, say Dawn of the Dead, the humans (even the shitty ones like mall security guard CJ and egoiste businessman) rally together in light of the new threat.

In Walking Dead, people see the end of the world as they know it as a chance to be as fucked up as they always wanted to, cause why not? It's like The Road, but with zombie flesh eaters instead of human ones.

Psychoses and depravities run rampant. The zombies are the least of their problems. And after a while, it becomes clear that in that situation, the best you can hope for is a fortified edifice without a speck of human life in it.

I thought the opening discovery of a basement of "zombies" in 1970's Dawn of the Dead was scary (they're not really zombies are they? Zombies are by definition under human control. These monsters are just "undead" "walking dead" peeps). I also thought the opening of the recent remake by Zach Snyder was scary, as well as the ending credits and moments in the movie (okay, I really liked that remake!).

I'm interested in this miniseries if it has hard core interesting characters and settings... not "Planet Terror" style borefest wink-wink spectacle.

In this instance, they're called Roamers. Unsubtle nod to George. And no, it's nothing like those films. It's dystopian and chronicles the search for the will to continue when there is no hope for improvement. What moves your feet forward when there is no future.

The most heartbreaking portrayal is that of Carl, the hero's little boy. He's only like 8 and within the span of a couple months, he goes from a normal child to a utilitarian no nonsense survivor at all costs.

All movies in this walking dead genre since the original Night of the Living Dead are "dystopian"! But it does sound like the emphasis is on fresh interesting characters and a serious environment. I'm watching it.

Ok, good point but I think 95% of zombie films are about the zombie invasion AND the internal fights between the human survivors...

There's always a bit of that, but in some of the big ones, not so much. 28 days later, they become family. Dawn of the Dead, again, family. Shawn of the Dead even, tight knit bunch.

In this one, it's a bigger group than those movies. It centers around a small tribe of about 15, all of which are pretty well developed characters with history and motives that we clearly understand.

So in that way, it's kinda like Lost.

I wish the producers had approached this comic as a film trilogy or something like that; I predict this Tv show will turn into something cheesy, the kind of junk that Internet nerds eat like mad...(no pun intended, since I'm gonna watch the show myself lol but you know what I mean...)

...hope I'm wrong...

I think the closer the film/tv show sticks to the book, the less margin of error there is.

One thing that really makes me want to break jaws is when screenwriters start to rewrite the comics. Its like buyin Taco Bell and then tryin to grind your own corn into tortillas for it once you get home.

What's the fuckin point? The work is done. Storyboards, done. Script, done. Costume design, done. Just cast it, find FX people and start shootin.

Like Sin City. Watchmen. KickAss & Spider-Man 1 (for the most part).

When studios start inventing canon, we get shit like emo Superman, Wanted and mouthless Deadpool.

As a nerd, that infuriates me.
