Food you miss in summer - and rediscover in the fall Every fall, I rediscover food that I love - but hardly eat during the heat of summer. For my lunch this week, I have beet stew with lamb meatballs...

It has wonderful curry spices in it, plus lemon juice for a little acid.
What foods do you "find" again in the fall? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Homemade chicken pot pie and ginger cookies. Two foods that are perfect in fall.

I have never even heard of this.
I would eat it but doubt I'll get Ron to.

Corn & Crab chowder (or chikkunz n corn). I can eat soups year round (and do) but since I don't just cook for just myself, soups as main meal are more of a fall winter thing here. [Edited 10/25/10 19:00pm]

PunkMistress said: Soup. Yep. Slow cooked - one pot meals and baked dishes.

It looks kind of gross, but I love lamb and I love beets, so I went ahead and made a copy of the recipe.
Do you remember that Uncle Ben's Indian flavored rice? I think it was called International Flavors or something or other. Anyway, it was a rice that had all the seasonings in it, even the currants. It was fantastic with lamb. They stopped making it years ago, but that rice was the bomb!

Make it. If you like beets and lamb - and the flavors of curry - you will not be disappointed. Trust me. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Ooooh...pork steak or country style ribs braised with sauerkraut. Baked potatoes with lots of butter and salt on the side. Makes the whole house smell good. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Maybe we should make it together when you come down?

Root vegetables and sage.
I like to roast parsnips and carrots and potatoes and turnips and onions and garlic and sage with some olive oil and salt and pepper. It's positively divine.
Roasted anything is great in the fall.
Chili. I made root veggie lentil chili mole a week or so ago. Yum.
Ans soup. Tonight I'm making cauliflower soup and baking fresh rosemary drop biscuits. mmmmmmmmmm... |

Wait - are there beets or not? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Don't see any beets, just those mammoth meat balls!

In the last photo, it looks like three meatballs and three beets. But the beets aren't cut up. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

But what's the red sauce? Beets in tomato sauce? I don't know, G...

Maybe they're pickled apples?

There are no tomatoes in it. (Only a couple tablespoons of tomato paste.) The beets are what makes the sauce red. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
