Cameron Announces Release Dates for Avatar 2 And 3 [img:$uid]http://i56.tinypic.com/2wp5m6w.jpg[/img:$uid]
October 27, 2010
James Cameron has locked in a deal with Fox to make Avatar 2 and 3, due in theaters December 2014 and December 2015 respectively.
Said the director in a statement, "It is a rare and remarkable opportunity when a filmmaker gets to build a fantasy world, and watch it grow, with the resources and partnership of a global media company. AVATAR was conceived as an epic work of fantasy – a world that audiences could visit, across all media platforms, and this moment marks the launch of the next phase of that world. With two new films on the drawing boards, my company and I are embarking on an epic journey with our partners at Twentieth Century Fox."
"Our goal is to meet and exceed the global audience's expectations for the richness of AVATAR’s visual world and the power of the storytelling. In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of AVATAR’s visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."
The sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau for Lightstorm Entertainment.
“AVATAR is not only the highest grossing movie of all time, it is a created universe based on the singular imagination and daring of James Cameron, who also raised the consciousness of people worldwide to some of the greatest issues facing our planet,” said Rothman and Gianopulos."
“We had no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world of AVATAR. This is a great day in the history of our company, and we thank Jim, Jon Landau, Rae Sanchini and all of their team and all of our Fox colleagues throughout the world, who have made this possible," Fox Film Entertainment Chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman said.

I love sci-fi and I still haven't seen Avatar. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

If you've seen Disney's Pocohontas you've seen Avatar. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Surely, you must mean sophisticated taste in films when referring to our opinions as BS.
But then again Cerebus hating on us-I guess- "Haters will hate." Now if I only could remember where that quotes from?

Ahhh I guess the beauty of a shitty no-story movie is that you can tell it forever and ever.

Avatar was great fun in 3D, but in no way did James Cameron create an original world that has the depth of details and mix of elements of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings (or even Harry Potter?).
When I think of Avatar the two main things I remember are:
1. Learning to ride those flying creatures as a rite of passage... (Dune) 2. The colors! Which are kind of like pulp scifi covers of yesteryear brought to life... very cool... But Lucas already brought that style into the last two Star Wars movies in brief glimpses of other worlds.
Avatar succeeds in pacing out it's story in a very entertaining way (much better than the new Star Wars movies). And Cameron is really good at giving hs characters spirit and life even if his dialogue sucks. I kind of wish James Cameron would tackle something he didn't write, because his stuff seems to always be a pastiche of past outside influences that don't add up to something totally new (at least not new to me). I mean if you see Somewhere in Time and then Titanic...
or Close Encounters than The Abyss...
or That Jamie Lee Curtis epsidoe of Buck Rogers (or the bionic woman episodes with fembots) and then Terminator...
I vote for James Cameron to direct the next Star Wars movie with Lucas writing the original script and letting Cameron and others rewrite/restructure.

You know I love you so...but Avatar is just an overblown black light poster.
No offense meant to all the awesome black light posters from back in the day.

Same here. | |

Avatar was certainly worth watching in 3D, but it's not worth owning...that's how I feel...
the only scene I truly liked was the death of the Colonel (the two poisonous arrows)...
not excited/interested about the sequels...can you say "milking"?

and Paul Haggis for the dialogues!

Not yet, but since all movies I get to watch are G- or PG-rated, I'll probably own HTTYD before I get to see Avatar.
Is Avatar appropriate for an 8-year old? No spoilers please. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

It should be-if the can handle star wars they should be ok. It would be best to watch it first to see if it is really appropriate. Each child is different-so I could not say all 8 year olds should be able to see it. I would think some 8 year olds could see it. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

I thought it way too scary for any of my kids, but again, my 10 year old is highly suggestible (? is that even a word ) and impressionable. He freaks out if there is a dark doorway or entrance to a cave in a movie.
