I used to work at a place where I had too much time off....

5 wks plus 15 sick days per year...

Get this, one boss used to make us fill in our scheduled time off in January, for the entire year.

How the f am I supposed to know when I will take vacation time in january?

LOL, put yourself in a dentist's position. They set appointments six months in advance, so they ALWAYS have to know their vacation schedules for a year in advance at all times.

I never thought about this until I got to know a dentist really well. He has the most structured life I've ever seen, and it's entirely because of how he has to set appointments.

He can NEVER just take off and go somewhere during the week.

I have learned one thing, in my 20 plus years in the work force. That one thing is, don't leave them anything that is rightfully yours. If you have the time, then take it. BUMP HIM!!

My former boss (the great one I used to have here) told me once, "Your vacation time is yours. It's your manager's job to figure out how to cover your absence."

The thing is, they used to let us carry over a little bit of time - or be paid off at the end of the year. (Salaried people like me tended to just carry over any we didn't use.) But they don't allow that anymore. It's a strict "use it or lose it" situation. So I'm not going to leave one nanosecond of that time in the bank. hmph!

I agree. My mom tells me the following, all the time. "Never give your bosses the habit of controlling you, for if you leave or are told to leave, people will asked, Michael who?, no matter how good a job, you did". Do not take advantage, but take what is yours.

I used to work in a department that wanted you to fill out all your vacation requests in January. It was based on the premise that manager would then be able to make arrangements for coverage of all offices.

Where I am now is a smaller department; consequently, vacations have to be scheduled in tandem. HOWEVER, my manager makes sure she takes the day AFTER a 3-day holiday weekend. For instance, Columbus day, a Monday, was a holiday for a lot of American workers. She took the following Tuesday off as well, and she will take the days after Thanksgiving and Chrsitmas Eve eve. I'm gonna pull a fast one as soon as I finish typing this. I'm going to put in my request for December 30 since the 31st will be a holiday because New Year's falls on a Saturday. hrmph

Every.damn.time I put in a vacation request, he gives me a look that makes me feel very guilty. Why? I have earned that time - it's not like I'm asking for something I'm not entitled to. I have never taken a medical leave (outside of a day or two of sick time here and there), a maternity leave, or any other kind of leave. And I always end up covering for those who do - sometimes for months at a stretch.

It really cheeses me off. mad

hug I HATE bosses like that! I remember once, a while back, I asked my boss for a week's vacation off (during the summer). He tried to make it look like I couldn't take the requested time off, since other people had also asked for that same week off (which was not even true). He then told me, "You can't take time off, we need you here!" I said to him, "I have already made plans for my week off. I'm taking it!" lol He didn't say anything more after that, but I was glad that I did not back off, and that I took the time I had coming to me. The way I see it, if you have vacation time that you have accrued from working at a certain company, you should be able to take it, without any grief from your boss.

Well, if he doesn't like it now, he's gonna be in a world of hurt come next November 1 - when I will have 20 years with this company and will be up to five weeks of vacation (the max).

They also let us "buy" a week (take a week of unpaid leave - the cost of which is prorated over 51 weeks, so you still get a paycheck the week you're gone) - so I can bump that up to six. Which you can bet your ass I will! lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's a power trip for most bosses....

I refuse to ask for time off...I let them know that I won't be available on the upcoming days...I always let them know ahead of time. It's all in your attitude...you're entitled to your time off.

I've got practically two weeks off in the beginning of Dec....first cruise to celebrate our twentith anniversary.

that's the spirit!

don't let him make you feel guilty....just DON'T feel guilty about it. Tell yourself that it is indeed YOUR time to take, and you've earned it. period. when he gives you that look....just smile and say "thanx" turn your back and walk away.

"not a fan" falloff yeah...ok

woot! lol Six weeks vacation would be awesome. Especially after 20 years with the company. Shoot, you've more than earned it. smile

RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

The corporate world does not think that way, especially people here in America.

All they think about is looking good and they old mighty dollar. There has been talk about cutting the work week down to 4 days, this has been rejected for fear of losing money. I have come to the conclusion that since I am in my 40's now, my days for proving myself in the work force, are long since past. I take my days when I see fit..Hell, I am on vacation as I type this. I get 5 weeks and I take them ALL!! I'm not leaving SHYT for NOBODY!!
