Homer Simpson. The writers are destroying him.

Homer Simpson used 2 b funny in a 'meant not 2 be funny' way. He had a natural stupidness. Like when he was eating flowers, or devouring Marge's cake, or would just say something that would just make you say "damn he's stupid!"

But now these days, they've made Homer a little 2 obvious. Now he's always screaming, and being happy and stupid in the same time. I'm really not fond of this Homer. I miss the old one.

The writers for Homer now really suck. Although the episodes are still cool.

I have never been able to tell what's so funny about The Simpsons. I've watched it several times, trying to understand why it's still on air, and why people laugh at it.

I think the show has been great but I think the time has now come to put an end to it.

Well, yes. I just don't think it's funny. It's just stupid.

I understand the Simpsons, I just don't like them, or understand why people think it's funny. It's stupid humor.

I laughed at Jerry Seinfeld's comedy special once, when it was on HBO. Mind you, it was on at about 1 am, and I hadn't slept yet. So, I'd say it was just the tiredness showing. biggrin

I laughed myself to tears during that comedy special, actually. My brother didn't quite know what to think.

The Simpsons is the greatest comedy ever made and I hope it sticks around 4 aslong as it can.

Im still amazed at how theyve kept it so consistantly entertaining 4 so many years without over stepping over the line and making it unwatchable 4 the younger generation.

AND...the BBC have just started a re-run of the very 1st series and are actually showing the episodes in chronological order, instead of an annoying random sequence.
Lots of ones I aint seen before...biggrin

Long Live The Simpsons!!

Man, what I cannot understand is the people out there who DON'T love the Simpsons. I have always been a major fan, and something interesting, I have never met a GUY who wasn't at least a casual fan of the Simpsons. It's always the ladies who don't like it. Instead, most women seem to love Friends, which, in my opinion, is a hunk of garbage. In it's first couple of seasons I thought it was ok, another standard sitcom, but it is waayy more popular than it deserves to be.

That said, Homer Simpson. hmmm... well, you're right in saying that Homer's Character has changed since the beginning, but, that's what.. in my opinion keeps the Simpsons fresh. It's entire pace and style has changed, so watching new episodes is like watching a different but equally good show. Plus, I really love watching Homer be a fool, one-dimensional as he may be. I notice him behaving differently depending on the writer anyways.

On a side note: R.I.P. to Futurama and Family Guy, two excellent cartoons that didn't get the chance they deserved (sniff).

I personally think the majority of popular TV sitcoms rely on tired out plotlines and a lot of dumbed-down, one dimensional humor peppered with too much trendy slang and lame catch phrases which they constantly drive into the ground for YEARS(**coughcoughFriendscoughcough**) and try to pass off as "comedy".

The Simpsons is actually a very consistently witty & multilayerd show, and is a lot more intellectual than people might assume at first glance. It has a lot of subtle cultural satire and social commentary to it, and the jokes often have a deeper bite or second layer to them, or are based on obscure references that requires a moment of thought to grasp, which all gives the humor depth past the obvious first 'layer' of the joke. Visually speaking, there is often a lot of background, visual gags/humor that gets missed during the first viewing of an episode because it goes by so fast and isn't in the main focal point of the frame..yet it's still there, you just have to pay close attention and be aware.

The writers of the Simpsons are, IMO, a very intelligent, perceptive group of people who make the humor of the Simpsons more than just a cartoon full of sight gags about a dumb guy and his crude family...though it's designed to (hopefully) also be funny on that level, as well. biggrin

At least this is how I see the program. That's why I enjoy it so much and why I truly don't think it can be dismissed as merely "stupid" humor.

For anyone who hasn't yet, you should check out Matt Groening's Life In Hell books. Along the same vein as the Simpsons, but more cynical.
