(none of these things are gender specific by the way - nothing only a man could provide)

a woman wants a man:

so she can fit in, conform, be accepted by today's societal norms

(ie. singledom = traditionally a sign of "something wrong" - although that is changing and becoming a norm of its own)

she wants positive affirmation and attention through the desire a man shows for her. That being attractive is important, is something drummed into women from childhood. Obtaining and keeping a man is evidence she is attractive. Not just to herself but to her peers.

a man chose HER over other women, that makes her SPECIAL

Personally, I want a mate in life because I need someone who understands me, and have genuine fondness and/or love for me. That's I think why women need men (or in some cases other women). People need to feel loved...and secure in that love.

Most women actually want a man to tell what she can and more importantly can not do. They want freedom and affection, but definitely also to be told when they're out of line. Kinda like dogs.

MOST people are happiest when existing within set boundaries - it feels VERY secure.

...and actually, you don't grow old with your kids. You essentially only have them until college, then they go off into the world to make their own life, their own way. Your husband or wife is the one that gives you your meds, takes joyrides with you, or helps you in the garden in your sunset years: case in point, my 80 year old father and my mother, whom he's been married to for almost 46 years and 30+ of those years she worked her ass off and made her own money (enough tosingle handedly pay for university, while dad assumed the responsibilty to get me through prep school the years before)...so..yeah, I really don't know where you came up with what you wrote

Girl in theory. I know too many family, friends, and acquaintances have grown ass children who went off to school and came back home!

Maybe they just don't want to go to family and high school reunions alone?
