Independent Sales??? Does anyone do any of these and actually make any kind of steady income doing it?
Like, Avon, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple???? Whatever.
If so which one, how did you make it work, and about how much do you make, and how much work do you have to put into it? I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure

I've never done it, but I had a coworker a few years ago who quit a teaching job to do Mary Kay full-time. She moved thru the ranks fairly quickly, and now she's driving a pink car. I think you have to be pretty assertive (aggressive?) and dedicated to make it work. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Aren't these kinds of ventures in terms of success totally up to you? Meaning you have total control over how much you put in and how successful you are.
I imagine some people bust their ass and do well and others don't put much time and effort into it and don't get much back.
I personally only think this type of work is only worth it if you're really willing to bust your ass.

Probably.
My problem is I'm not very aggressive. I sold Avon for a while, and always 'felt bad' asking people to pay for their stuff.

Then you will not do well. Find something else to do.

It's totally up to how much time and effort you're willing to put into it with anything that is independent.
Our roomie does pre-paid legal part time (sells the service and recruits associates) and seems to be making some decent on the side money. When we had the DC meetup I was like "just don't try and sell it to my friends, that's not what they came here for" If you're interested in something like that I'm sure he could answer some questions for you: clyde58@prepaidlegal.com

I used to do Pampered Chef. I didn't do it for the money, but I actually earned very good money out of it.
I think you have to be very disciplined and put aside time to work at home on whatever it is. It's very easy to procrastinate.

Cool Thanks!
I know sales people can be the worst sometimes.
Lisa, I LOVE pampered chef. If I got into that, I'd be spending all my earnings on product! I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure

He's very good at what he's doing. I just knew that if folk came for a Meet Up and got pitched a service I'd be hearing it all over these boards.

I am and Independent Business owner with Quixtar for about 10 years now, aside from my fulltime gig as a counsellor. I make $1,500 extra a month because of my what I sell and my downline,(The people under me). I focus on stuff that people need, like toiletries and stuff like that. I find that by focusing on one thing, people take you more seriously, instead of trying to sell them something that they don't need or can't use. Around xmas time, is the only time that I will sell something else. But my main niche is house hold items. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

1500 a month is good. Thats more than what I make at my full time job. I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure

It is. Like I said, it helps to have people in your downline and to sell something that people need. This did not happen overnight, it took awhile. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

I use to sell Mary Kay...was decent money for the area I lived in. It seemed like everyone selling it at the time. I have thought about getting into Passion Parties...they seem to do very well. Proud Memaw to Seyhan Olivia Christine ,Zoey Cirilo Jaylee & Ellie Abigail Lillian

I saw a piece about this on either 20/20, or some program like that....the only people who make money are the people sending the salespeople the product.
If you hope to make money selling, you have to deduct what it costs you in food (for the party), the gift for the host/hostess...etc.
The only way to make money via this route is to have alot, and I mean alot of people under you selling, so that you reap the profit.
sounds like a pyramid scheme, doesnt it.......

the majority of these businesses do not deliver on their promises of financial dreams. that's just the hard facts.
The ones that actually do I believe do so because they are very aggressive and devote much of their lives to it. Which is ok, I guess...if that's your sort of thing.

He's a really nice guy and a hard worker. I told him I didn't mind him talking about what he does at all, I just didn't want him pitching stuff while y'all were here to party.

No problem at all. I enjoyed talking to him and he wasn't hard pressed either. We had a friendly little chat.

I haven't found a job yet that doesn't require busting your butt in order to be successful.
If anyone know of a job where you can be successful without having to work hard, let us know!

Yea but with these sales jobs it's not so much the busting your ass that turns people off, it's the aggressive sales tactics that you have to use to basically manipulate some ppl into buying your product. Chocolate1: Thats cool. I want a PINK CAR!! You can sell Mary Kay and hang out at my local grocery store and troll around and approach women with the same schpeal, "you are so stylish! Have you thought of Mary Kay?". With their boxed wine in their cart - of course it's boxed white zinfandel!! And I retort, if you are trying to serve me wine during our consult, I drink red zinfandel and zinfandel doesn't come in a box. White zin - the wine women drink when they think they're being chic when it's really quite trashy!! I swear, I have seen them huddle in the parking lot, disperse, call each other in the store and tell the rookie where potential people are. And then one of them buys the obligatory box of white zin!!!! If you like white zin, and like farming the same grocer all day, it's for you!!

And not to say white zin is trash, I just wouldn't have two boxes of the most ill reputed wine. Cause hell I drink wine coolers! But I won't have a pack of them in my cart whilst trying to get someone to do busineSs with me!!
