Osamu Tekuza (who influenced Hayao Miyazaki) was also a genius in my opinion. He can be considered the Godfather of Anime. I still believe that Disney believe lifted some things from his series "Kimba The White Lion" to make The Lion King

Some of his best works include Astro Boy (the first Japanese animated series to air in the United States), Black Jack, Phoenix, and of course Metropolis

the manga series of black jack and phoenix predated these (i think) and were my favs for quite a while

Totoro was a HUGE favorite of my girls when they were little. I absolutely love the dreamlike quality to the story and animation.

I didn't know the creators made so many other films. I'll have to check them out!

It's what you make it.

the animation is spectacular and the story unformulaic

we couldn't guess the ending

and although there was really no action, my boys 10,9 and 6 say this is their favourite movie EVER, before this one they loved Spirited Away best.

where did you have access to it?

one of the guys of my class had satellite TV in the late-80s/early 90s...which was, at that time, amazing cool he made VHS copies of those cartoons; my mother once discovered one of those tapes and I'll never forget the fact that she didn't care that much because it was not a porno neutral lol she destroyed the tape nevertheless lol

sigh we used to have such freedom when we were kids

I remember watching soft porn at midnight at a friends house during a sleepover

I expect more of that will come, but at least when they are a bit older they will cope with it.

Because I have 3 boys, they never really go anywhere, always tearing around here just the 3 of them. We have movie night on Friday nights (Ghibli night woot! ) and the rest of the time they can choose between half an hour of a computer game, wii or TV. They always choose wii super mario dead

well, now that you mention it

my earliest memories, are of sitting on the steps in our hallway perusing porn mags that I found on a shelf in the downstairs bathroom.

Not just soft stuff either mind you confused

I would have been anywhere between the ages of 4 and 7

VERY irresponsible of my folks to just leave them lying around, or perhaps they thought I would NOT climb up onto the toilet cistern to reach the magazines?

Porn I watch now has to be EXTREME, otherwise I can't get off cry

thanks mum and dad

you know Lars Von Trier? The Danish film-maker?

He said his parents gave him NO boundaries at ALL

and he begrudges them that.

From wikipedia:

Lars Trier was born in Copenhagen to Ulf and Inger Trier. His parents considered themselves both communists and committed nudists,[4] and the young Lars went on several childhood holidays to nudist camps. They regarded the disciplining of children as reactionary. Trier notes that he was brought up in an atheist family, and that although his stepfather was Jewish, he was not religious. He did not discover the identity of his biological father until 1989. His parents did not allow much room in their household for "feelings, religion, or enjoyment", and also refused to make any rules for their children, with complex results for von Trier's personality and development.

On the other hand, I was never allowed to go to a single party in my teens, not ONE!

WTF!!! wacky

shit yeah! I couldn't believe Lion King when I saw it, having been a Kimba fan for years!

Disney STILL denies they stole from Kimba when it's obvious they did

I love Spirited Away so much that it might be unhealthy. Oh, and then there's this movie called Spirited Away, I LOVE that one! Also, they made this really cool Spirited Away film, it makes me quite happy. redface lol I really like Howl's, too, but the rest of them haven't seemed to create the same feeling in my gut as Spirited Away does. I don't think I've seen the most recent one. Ponyo?

Didn't work for me. I really dislike most of it, actually. I can see the beauty of the craftsmanship, but stylized artwork (especially the big eyes - ugh, I hate the big eyes) and a lot of the subject matter does nothing for me.

Again, I recognize the artistic value. I've read quite a bit about how many people work on some of that stuff and for how long. Their factory/studio system is quite amazing. And I truly wish more American studios still believed in line drawn animation. But dude... I HATE the big eyes SO MUCH! lol Also, you can't really deny that there's a glut of the stuff. Some of it is great, but some of it is just so-so, and a lot of it repeats the same basic themes.

I definitely agree with what you're saying, there's A LOT of series and you have to dig through them to find great ones. I use this site called MyAnimeList to keep track of all the series I've watched in the past 12 years and from the 180 entries (there's more, I just haven't listed them all yet lol ) there aren't many I would re-watch. There's at least 30 to 35 (I'm looking at the list right now lol ) that I would rewatch start to finish

There's a lot of crap too lol Stuff like Pokemon.... ugh

I also agree about how fast they work. You have guys at Marvel and DC release an issue once a month while these guys are releasing several chapters weekly. weekly issues of Shonen Jump is about as thick as a standard telephone book eek

I remember hearing about the magazines being pretty thick but once I was in downtown Berkeley and actually saw one and my jaw dropped. There's about 20 series that are serialized and runs about 500 or more pages. Their work ethic is mind boggling
