Speaker wattage: Anyone here know about it? Some folks I know are asking about karaoke equipment. The rental company is offering them a choice of:
One 100-watt speaker or two 400-watt speakers.
The two 400-watts are $80 more, so they don't want it if they don't need it.
Situation: 80 people, max.; room maybe about 1000 square-feet.
Anyone?

I am not a huge expert, but the amp's wattage matters as much as the speaker's |

That's what I thought. So, I don't know why they're just asking them how much speaker wattage they want. |

yeah that is important. Maybe they only have one type of amplifier?
I have a PA system and the Amp is 1000 watts, and the speakers are 400 watts each, and that is enough power for the situation you're talking about. That's for vocals to be heard over a drummer & electric guitars
I guess I would tell them to go for the two 400 watt speakers, now that I am reading more closely, if only for the two speakers instead of one. |

These are older folk (in their 60's and 70's), so I don't think they'd care how many speakers, they just want to be sure they'll have enough volume for that number of people in a room that size. |

right but two speakers will fill the room better, in addition to being more powerful
If its not that important the cheap option is probably fine, but think it sounds a bit minimal to be heard over 100 people chattering around the room

The two 400 watt speakers may also provide a better, more widespread sound at a lower volume than a single 100 watt speaker that you'd have to turn way up. |

the master speaks:
That's a very big difference! I would definitely get the two 400-watt speakers.
It's in stereo for starters and less likely they'll blow it up when they get pissed.
For 80 people 100 watts is def not enough
(pissed = drunk) |

it always happens, if you amps output is more per channel than the speaker, you can break the speaker. It happened at our wedding! my housemate hung his speakers out the windows and turned up the music and suddenly it didn't sound so good any more LOL
I googled:
http://www.stereo.net.au/...wn-speaker |

and also I learned this from yahoo answers:
A common misconception is that if you have speakers that can handle more power than your receiver can deliver you'll be safe. The fact of the matter is that if you over work your amplifiers you are much more likely to blow speakers than if you use a receiver that is rated at a higher wattage than your speakers.
