I watched a few episodes of the first series and for some reason I found the swearing grated on me. Funny, as I think 'The Wire' (based solely on the first season, mind, as that's all I've seen) is one of the best series ever. That has plenty of cussing. In Dexter it stuck out though, feeling forced and unnecessary. Just distracting and clunky.

Season 2 was actually my least favorite. The convenience of Lila taking out the one person that knew Dexter's secret but didn't fit the code, the pointlessness of Esme, and Lila never seemed all that believably threatening to me. He's up against a serial killer that knows him almost more than he knows himself, a power-tripping, bloodthirsty DA that can cover up shit as he sees fit, a serial killer that's been doing it like 30 years...and some crazy chick from support group meetings. One of those things don't fit. And I thought 3 was a nice change of pace, Dexter forced to live alongside someone who knows about him.

Even my missus doesn't like it (the show in general, and the swearing), and she loves anything to do with death, murder, crime, forensics etc. AND she swears like a sailor (she doesn't "give a DAMN SHIT!" ), so it's definitely a strange one. On paper it should be something we'd like, but instead I find myself, much to my horror, having to agree with Erin.

Understandable. All the crime and forensics is sort of secondary in the series. It really only serves as an excuse to let Dexter be Dexter, and not much more.

Debra is by far the most annoying character on the show for me and the people I watch/discuss the show with. She looks like a male horse and talks out the side of her mouth. The way they dress her on the show doesn't help, either. I can't completely agree about her swearing, though, because that makes me laugh. I think it's supposed to be purposely jarring. I can't believe Jennifer is married to Michael C Hall in real life. I mean, love is blind and all that. But she's got the body of a SKINNY teenage boy.
