There a virtual world where you can have an avatar (kind of like that yahoo persona you can construct in terms of visually) and rent an apt, and flirt, and go bowling... and all the other people are controlled by other users from around the world.
I've checked it out once. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

well... most games today are programmed with storylines and characters that are tuned to keep a persons attention for 80+ playable hours (if they're well made...)! Now that figure is set as if you would sit and play non-stop (which is impossible...) but you're still looking at the equivalent of two full-time job weeks. So now imagine if you (or your S.O.) only allow yourself to play one or two hours a day. Then add the possibility that you're not that great a gamer... it can take months to complete a game!
Shoot, my wife and I fell in love over Gran Tourismo back in the day...

Oh.
Okay.
I just don't get it.
My SO owns 2 games (he trades them in or something to get new ones)
The new Tiger Woods......BORING.
And Modern Warfare 3 which he plays for hours on end and I don't know how, its the most barbaric, gruesome thing I've ever seen. And he's not even a violent person. I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure

That's a GIGANTIC part of the appeal... well, not so much the gruesome but the fantasy of it all... I've flown attack helicopters, commanded armies, and slain countless aliens. ALL of this is impossible for me in the real world...

Well okay then.
I was worried it was some secret cult or something. I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure

You and your wife play/played together? That's cool. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

well, besides the addictive gaming (depending on what you're addicted to) the thing that's probably ruining most marriages is "Playstation Home". Which is a virtual world network on the PS3 where you can create an avatar, buy a house/apt, shop at the mall, go to the theater and in general get your virtual freak on with people from around the world.
it's kind of sad/hilarious at the same time. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

LOL
No not a cult, it just caters to people's competitive side as well without them having to leave the house. A lot of the appeal in Modern Warfare is more than just explosions and headshots. It's the satisfaction of outthinking your opponents or just working well as a team to win.
It's easy to lose track of time once you a guy (or lady) gets into it. Most people probably don't decide to stay up til dawn playing. It just sort of happens before you realize it. Which can be a bad thing in itself. It's really easy to fall into the "just one more routine". One more becomes 10 more and your alarm clock is going off. [Edited 9/25/10 17:07pm]

Videogames are fuckin' awesome. Period
really, videogames are a lot funnier than modern TV or the random navigation through the Internet ...
videogames allow you to live extreme experiences that you can't/don't want to do in real life. Wii is only the beginning people! virtual reality games are coming!

Online gaming. Where you can play against other people from around the world via the PlayStation network. You can even talk to people if you so choose. That's what keeps my friends on until 3 or 4 in the morning and HAS actually ruined one marraige. But he didn't care. Now he can play until 3 or 4 in the morning UNINTERRUPTED.

I got a PS3 last Christmas and it hasn't been nearly as addicting as I hoped. Most of the games seem so linear and scripted, and the controllers have too much going on! (Do I sound old yet?)
I wonder if the family would enjoy a Wii more... We'll see if ModNation Racers will save this system for us.

I picked up Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, like 40 Sega Genesis games, for XBOX 360, also available on PS3. Video Games were much more unforgiving back then.

I've got one. Found out I've got a lot more impoortant things to do than sit around playing games all the time. Mine mostly gets used for watching blu-rays and streaming stuff from net flix. If you're not doing the fucking, then you're taking one.

Not saying there's anything wrong with the latter, but I'm not sure how movie entertainment is necessarily more important than gaming entertainment. Just sayin' "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Sometimes I send pictures of me butt ass naked to other women in the PS3 Home (A thing where you create a character and talk to others) You can also build your own house and decorate it and choose your clothing. I always pick the flyest, baddass, most pimped out clothes and furniture before I let any virtual women into my house.

They might, depending on the type of games you all like, but the new "PS Move" for PS3 is like 20x better than the Wii in terms of actual technical gameplay. It was just released last week. I've been saying for months that Move just might put Wii out of business, unless Nintendo drastically upgrades their system. I have three gaming machines, PS3, PS2 and my PC. And once in a while I'll whip out the old ColecoVision and Atari shit for old times sake.

Absolutely not.. The Move, in terms of tech, is not significantly improved from the Wii's motion plus.
However, even if it were, the Move's failure will come from two extremely significant factors:
1) It's an add-on product: The Move, like so many other add-on products (including Wii's own motion plus), will simply not get enough support from developers because it's an add on product. Let's assume that 25% of PS3 owners buy a Move. That would be a huge success in volume sales; imagine if a game was purchased by 25% of PS3 owners.
Nevertheless, a developer is now designing a game (that they sell for the same amount), but for a market representing only 1/4th of their potential market. The wii is succesful because its controller came right out of the box.
2) Cost prohibitive: Consider the PS3 is still 100 dollars more expensive than the Wii, plus the move, equals approximately 250 dollars additional investment in the Move over the wii. And for what purpose? To appeal to casual gaming. Casual gamers do not want to spend 250 bucks extra because the tech has an arguable edge over Wii motion plus, a 20 dollar upgrade.
Business wise, the Move was not smart, IMO. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring faith. If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal" - Carl Sagan
