I'm Totally Annoyed At My Pet Sitter Right Now I went out of state for 6 days to attend a wedding in North Carolina, and had a great time. Got to spend some time with the family, which is always good.
While I was gone, I had pet sitters (a husband and wife team) come to my place every day to look in on my cats (feed them, scoop the box, play with them, etc.). I also asked the pet sitters to get my mail and bring in my paper every day.
Everything as far as looking after my cats and getting my mail seemed to go okay. But as I was looking through my newspapers today, I noticed that I am missing two of them (the whole paper is not in with the others). WHAT THE HELL????
I asked a couple of my neighbors here if they had picked up the papers, because they saw the paper sitting outside of my door, and they figured out that I was not at home. None of them did, in fact, they told me that the next time I go out of town, that I should let them know, and they would pick the papers up and keep them, until I came back, so that I could read them.
I then called my pet sitter and left them a message, explaining to them what had happened, and asking them where my two missing papers were, since they are not here. I even looked throughout the house, in closets and drawers, thinking maybe they had stuck them into a drawer or something, but they were not there (which I said in my message). I also told them nicely that the papers were not with the others, and that I was not real happy about it. I also said that I had purposely asked them to pick the papers up and keep them so that I could read them when I got back, rather than just cancel the paper for the days that I was not at home.
I'm waiting for them to call me back, because as Ricky Ricardo once said, "You got a lot of 'splainin to do!" If they have the papers with them somewhere and I can get them back, the problem will be solved, and I will be happy about it. But if they don't have them, then I guess I will need to call the newspaper directly, explain what happened, and asked to be credited for the two days that I did not get the paper. The person who delivers my papers is always very good about making sure my paper is left at my door every day, so I don't think that she is the issue here.
I've used these pet sitters before, and have always been pleased with the service that they provide, so I am at a loss as to what happened. Next time I go away, I think I will take up several of my neighbors' offer to pick up my papers and keep them for me until I come back. At this point, I'm seriously questioning whether I want to use these pet sitters in the future. If they can't pick up and put all of the papers in the same spot, so I can have them when I come back, then what else are they going to mess up?????
Idiots!!!!!!! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

It's a paper. What's that 85cents? How much time have you wasted looking for, worrying about and writing about a few sheets of paper with yesterdays news written on them? Time for a hobby? Serenity now. Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

I don't need a hobby, and I don't need your sarcasm either. I feel I have every right to be miffed about two newpapers that were prepaid and that I did not get. I'm looking for a job right now, so I need to see a paper every day so that I can check out the want ads (which is VERY important to me right now). You obviously don't feel the same way I do, but such is life. [Edited 9/21/10 19:58pm] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

How were your pets taken care of since that's the important thing?
If I was your pet sitter, I'd tell you to find someone else next time if you're going to nag about 2 stupid newspapers.
Then I'd make sure to swipe a couple next time you're gone....

Honey, I get that you're annoyed but 2 newspapers ain't worth this much aggrivation.
If the petsitters take good care of your animals, that is most important. I'd just have your neighbors pick up the papers next time since they offered.

Personally, if you called me up and accused me of stealing old newspapers and I HADN'T done it, I wouldn't return your call....and I'd also think you were a little bit nuts.
You've got your line of enquiries wrong...you go to the newspaper first to ask about a mistake THEN move on to throwing accusations at peoples answer machine....probably not about newspapers but hey ho. Whatever floats your boat [Edited 9/22/10 1:56am]

Thanks, luv4u and roseypink56.
What some people on this thread don't seem to realize is that I paid these people to look after my cats, bring in my mail and paper every day. It's not like it was a neighbor couple that I asked to look after my cats while I was gone (and they were doing it free of charge), this is a couple that does this for a living.
I don't think I'm nuts for being irked at my pet sitters for what they failed to do. There were other things that I did not like (cat food spilled behind the refrigerator, a pile of dirty cat litter sitting on the bathroom sink, etc.). But I'm not going to mention that to them, I'm willing to let that slide, since those things can easily be cleaned up.
I also don't think that my newspaper carrier is to blame, because when I asked my neighbors about my missing newspapers, they did not mention to me that they did not receive a paper that day either. So I don't think calling the newpaper to see if there was a mistake is going to be the right way to go, since as I said in my original post, the paper not being delivered to me has never been a problem in the past. I definitely think either the pet sitters held onto it (they did not necessarily steal it, but maybe they forgot to leave it here when they left), or someone saw it sitting by my door, and picked it up.
I'm over it now - today is a new day. If worse comes to worse, I can always get the papers from a neighbor of mine. I'm nosy and don't like to miss a thing (because that's how I am). [Edited 9/22/10 6:41am] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

[Edited 9/22/10 6:41am] Issues regarding th state they left the place in are fair enough and, if they did steal your papers, then that's naughty...but you've said yourself that you don't know for sure - if the paper people say they definitely delivered it or your neighbours can swear they saw that days paper go through your door and nobody else has been into the house then it's a good bet they've taken them...but until you can prove it there's always the strong possibility that there's a cat sitter somewhere with a message which seems looney to them

Nancy, hon even if they took the papers it could have been done completely innocently. I'm not saying they'd have been right or entitled to do so but some people might not think that this would have been a big issue for you. A lot of folk would maybe be like well, it'll be yesterday's (or last week's) paper by the time she'll get back so it'll essentially be trash. I'll just take it home and read it. Again, I'm not saying that is correct to do. Just that I'm not sure I'd go thinking of them as thieving. Have they ever taken anything from your house? Or gone through your stuff or given you reason to worry about having them there (besides two newspapers...possibly).
And I can't stress enough: how did they care for your pets? I stress so much over boarding or leaving our dogs (we always try to find a way so they can stay in the house with someone rather than board) on trips that to be honest, I'd gladly give a week's papers as long as I know they were happy and cared for while we were gone.
Just breathe. | |

i get where you're coming from. it may only be a 'paper' but it's important to you and that's enough.
i hope your pet sitters didn't take those from you. pet sitters aren't supposed to mess with your stuff. some do, but those are the ones you fire.
i wonder if an online version of the papers exist? but if i were you i'd just call the paper and tell them that you 'didn't get' those missing issues. see if they can bring new copies?
hope things work out!

If someone I was paying for a service left dirty cat litter in my sink and also somehow spilled catfood behind my fridge ( ), the disapperance of two newspapers would be the furthest thing from my thoughts. Infact, if I had a gun, I'd shoot them in the face.

what was the 'etc' Nancy? i'm genuinely curious. Are you sure you weren't just robbed?

You were out of town for 6 days..... PAYING someone to watch your cats... Everything was cool with the pets and your mail..... Missing 2 papers.....2.......which in all likelyhood could have been swiped by anyone.... Your argument, if you will...is that you need to see EVERY paper....because you are looking for a job.....
mmmk.....
Then there are the things you're willing to let slide.....which to me seem like real reasons to be "miffed"....like the mess on the sink....yet again....you go back to saying they "failed" to do their job.....
God I am worried about you.....seriously.....
