"Genetic altering" has been going on since the dawn of agriculture.
It used to be called "hybrids."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
True, hybrid fruits and vegetables are plentiful and people seem to find them fascinating. It's gone much further than that, though. People have stopped questioning things like perfectly uniform, non-bruising tomatoes. But as soon as you start messing around with meat people start freaking out. Some sort of weird, irrational cloning fears, I guess.

but they're injecting hormones into an animal to alter it's natural growth cycle. that's different than merging an orange with a tangerine. what are these hormones and where are they coming from? what if we get mad salmon disease?
it could happen. | |

My life in general. I've been doing so many things wrong in my life and when I look at it and realize how much I work have to do to be better I just want to crawl into a hole and die. I graduated bitches!!! 12-19-09

Been there. Not too long ago. It does get better.

I know but I've reeeeeeally been procrastinating. That's where most of my frustration lies. I can't figure out why I don't seem to want success more than I want the immediate pleasure of putting off the work. And every time it bites me in the butt I get in a funk. I graduated bitches!!! 12-19-09

Typhoon Tip said on facebook his hovercraft is full of eels. I'd say that would be pretty annoying!
My annoyance is kids being sick on school holidays and missing swimming lessons I already paid for

It's fear and hysteria.
Understandable fear and hysteria, because "messing with Mother Nature" goes against all our sensibilities. This is probably even more true for those of us who are religious. But once you do some research and learn that all the reliable science we can throw at GM food shows absolutely no risk of harm, you relax. I hope.
It's like vaccines and autism. It's easy for lots of folks to get caught up in the hysteria, especially if you aren't exposed to the facts. "OMG they NEVER used to give so many vaccines and kids NEVER had so much autism!!!111
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I just imagined someone saying "It's okay though, my son only has a little autism" "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

We are getting more and more unhealthy. Pretty soon we'll all need prescription meds just to stay alive. There's a conspiracy I tell ya.
I'm bugged by the fact that people are too trusting of the FDA.

The FDA eats the food the FDA approves. The FDA, even with all it's failings, does far more good for us that like agencies (or lack thereof) in other parts of the world.
I agree with you regarding animals being given feed containing animal byproducts. And that goes for all animals. They shouldn't be given anything other than what they would have naturally eaten before we started farming them for food. However, they don't roam the countryside eating whatever they can find anymore BECAUSE we started raising them for food. Since that's the case, they need to be given vitamins and hormones so they don't get diseased from standing around with a bunch of their kind in small, dung filled spaces. I can't really get too much into this one.
In regards to the fish in particular, it doesn't bother me. We're killing our oceans and large bodies of water so fast that they'll never be fully repaired. Doing further damage, fish species from all over the planet have been released into waters where they don't belong. If they can figure out a way to farm fish to full size quickly and safely I'm all for it. But I'm not against genetic engineering of any kind, including that involving human beings. In the end, when people start being saved from inevitable death by discoveries made in this manner, very few of them will be against it.
I don't know about immunizations because I don't have children and I don't get them myself. Nor do I ingest pills of any kind if I can avoid it. I've used antibiotics twice in my adult life.
Of course there is a link between fast food and obesity. But that link is centered largely around the fact that a lot of families eat it multiple times a week and don't do any kind of exercising. It's not JUST fast food that causes the problem. If you live a healthy lifestyle and eat fast food a couple times a month you're probably doing OK.
Pretty sure they've proven there is no direct link between moderate cell phone use and brain cancer. People used to think microwaves caused cancer, too.
Pesitcides are evil, for sure. Many of them have been proven to be harmful YEARS after they've been approved for use. But again, we've created the world we live in and if we don't want it to completely collapse pesticides are sometimes a necessary evil.
I don't believe in conspiracies. Period. Government agencies sometimes do dirt. But so do your neighbors. People keep secrets. Sometimes those secrets become public. It doesn't mean there's any kind of organized conspiracy behind what's happening.

wait...what? an actual show about real life polygamists? how do they not get caught by the law or shunned by their church?
another thing that bugs me. how any woman with half a brain could fall for the old line "god wanted me to have a lot of wives but he didn't want you to have a lot of husbands. plus he wanted us to all live in secret and you still have to work or either collect welfare for the brats I sire."

Please give me a link to a reputable medical journal article that in any way supports a link between vaccines and autism.
I'm with you on fast food - obesity, pesticides in our diet - illness, and vegetarian animals being fed meat - bad.
But the autism-vaccine link simply does not exist. Neither does GM food-mutant atrocity.

Duh. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That is not what they're doing. Salmon only grow in the spring and summer. They are putting a gene into them (from another kind of fish) that allows them to grow year 'round.
The fish are not being injected with hormones. [Edited 9/21/10 17:14pm] We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I ripped all 24 discs of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection sets and now I'm trying to figure out what to put on just one disc. That's not as bad as it sounds really, because I can put a lot more than one of those discs on the one I'm going to burn. But I've already sorted out a bunch of files and then deleted them THREE TIMES!
Anyway, Water Water Every Hare is chapter eight on disc one of the first set and it will DEFINITELY be on whatever combination I end up burning. It's one of about twenty shorts that I'm sure on. After that I just get all out of control with "oh that's a good one!", or "I bet they haven't seen this one a million times", or "this one is just so underrated, I'd better include it, too".

That was to your original post where you just said "fuck FDA" and trust science. I'm glad you provided an additional post with some clarification and we agree about fast food and the rest.
here's some quick links . I love reading health-related studies.

this one is about cell phones and cancer. it's interesting because there have been reports about cell phones and tumors but the jury is still split on whether those tumors become cancerous.

We go back and forth about vaccines and autism. I personally think it is way too early to rule out that vaccines don't at least contribute to autism.

DesireeNevermind.
Are you fucking kidding me.
You make me laugh all the time and I really enjoy your posts.
But I asked you for links to reputable studies.
This is a direct quote from the first link you posted:
Many doctors and experts are concern about obesity in today, with the rise in obesity they start to question and study whether fast food can cause obesity. There are many facts show that eating too many fast food meal per weeks will cause obesity. Some of the facts are: - Obesity rates is increase every year - Many people choosing fast food as their primary food - Cheap and convenient, fast food restaurants everywhere - A lot of fast food advertisements
Obesity rates is increase every year??!!??!!
