so in the end, the ultimate skin tone is a kind of light tan then, desired by all?

hmmm

beats me. all i know is, when i bare my snowy white skin (really not much into tanning, me) for public viewing i get all kinds of derisive looks. how can it go both ways? people hate people who are too black, and they also hate people who are too white.....? neutral

I get that too. But I don't really want skin cancer, and I don't care enough about self tanning to bother.

I'm very pale, and I have no desire to tan.

Whenever I show up in a bathing suit or shorts, I always get "OMG, ERIN, YOU'RE SO PALE!" Sometimes it's annoying, sometimes it's rude, but I just smile. I like my skin. I've never felt like it was "hate."

It's what you make it.

right, i've not felt 'hate, per se. but, i've felt strong derision. i love san diego, CA, and my friend lives there so i've been to various beaches there on more than one occasion. once, i found myself sitting on the sand immediately next to a woman my age with THE tannest skin ever. she could not keep from staring at me and smiling a little, at how freakish i looked. it was... weird. every time i glanced at her she was staring at me.....

So silly. rolleyes

Like it's totally insane for someone to be satisfied with their natural skin tone. Whatevs, I like picturing all the wrinkles the super-tanners are gonna have.

yep. tanning ages skin ten times faster than normal agin. still, isn't it funny how one's skin color can never really be 'right' no matter what color it is???? nuts giggle

i think Gabourey's skin is actually gorgeous.

I've been photo'd and around sets. I can't tell if it's lighting or lightening (my guess, really, is the former).

But the wig they stuck her with reminds me of

Señor Wences

I know. I'm wrong for that. But not as wrong as Elle.

I once went to the beach (yeah, "once" lol ) with this guy who teased me the whole time about how pale I was, and how I was applying sunscreen all day. We met 2 friends of his sunbaking in the dunes, and one had a tummy nearly as dark as that omfg then at the end of the day, this guy was lobster red and painful to the touch hah! and I was the same as before mr.green

I think she is so damned pretty. Her features are just perfect, the heffa has the perfect smile. But the weight at her age should be a health concern. We women of color are prone to diabetes & heart disease when we're not at a manageable weight, so we definitely don't want to see her go down that road. She's too damned cute and talented, and I would love to see her work a long and fruitful career without any health issues.

Yes, Gabby is a pretty lady, but she needs to really start loving herself more. Her weight is not only terribly unattractive, it is life-threatening. She's too young to be that heavy, and she's is definitely limiting her acting opportunities. How many movie rolls are going to call for a morbidly obese black woman? Hell, for that matter, how many rolls are there available for morbidly obese white women or morbidly obese folk in general?

Other than clearly seeing how her weight is a health issue, I'm not going to start throwing stones about who, when, and how someone should love themselves because they are overweight. It's not up to me to ascertain whether this young woman loves herself or not, particularly since I am not privy to any information about how she came to be that size, whether it has something to do with a medical condition, so on and so forth. As for her career, she appears to be doing fine and has things coming down the pike. She's always said that her decision to pursue acting was a fluke, and if it ended tomorrow she could always finish pursuing her psychology degree after investing the money she's made from Tinsletown. Sounds tome like she has her head on right, andI imagine that if she does choose to lose weight it will be for her health and not simply to fit the stereotype as to how an actress should look.

Personally I think t's the lighting. She's just what is referred to in the business as "blown out". Those Tungsten lights are a mofo. I've never worked for the American branch of ELLE, but I have worked for several of the European editions. Dark skinned models of African descent traditionally have enjoyed a working for the magazine without having to worry that someone would lighten their skin here, the darker skin color is part of the appeal and the sub-Saharan African woman has been a mainstay in couture fashion here for decades. I'm going to stick wth it being the lighting, but American attitudes are different, so I won't say that I'm 100% sure. Does anyone know who shot the story/cover? Also who's the chief editor of the American edition? Is it Nina Garcia? I can't remember. But knowing who shot it and who the editor in chief is would definitely provide some insight...

Interesting that you say that nod I myself didn't know that lighting was such an issue regarding black women in cover spreads(and mostly, films) till recently. There was a discussion about how black actresses get poor lighting whenever they're in the hands of white director.

The article is titled "Are black actresses forced to 'ugly' themselves up". What Kelita Smith said was eyebrow raising because I don't even think it would be possible in her case, but it made me look at this issue with a different perspective - esp when you put somebody like Voila Davis(who gets mentioned) into consideration. What you said reminded me of what poster Geneva Girl said, you can read the whole thing here: http://www.shadowandact.com/?p=30197

As for Gabby, I wish folks would stop pissing on her parade, I swear the woman can't win for losing lol she seems happy with it.
