The best part is, VCD can be treated with special breathing exercises - no nasty meds! It's what you make it. |

Your vocal cords could cause all those symptoms??
They're causing my throat to close, not letting in enough air.
It's often misdiagnosed as severe asthma, since the symptoms mimic asthma so much.
I'm seeing a neurologist for the other symptoms, since VCD doesn't explain the involuntary muscle twitching and burning. It's what you make it. |

without meaning to pose as an expert, i was thinking earlier that it almost sounds like you have been exposed to a respiratory toxin.
i work in construction defect litigation, we often have clients whose homes are leaky, therefore mold colonies grow under carpets, in walls.
some of the symptoms described in the initial post reminded me of that.
hope you are well soon

hello lawsuit
- ASTHMA MEDICATIONS such as bronchodilators or steroid sprays that irritate the vocal cords-- "The administration of Beta-agonists [e.g. the bronchodilator, Albuterol] not only fails to relieve symptoms [of VCD] but may actually aggravate them." Beta-agonists can weaken the LES (lower esophageal sphincter), causing more gastric reflux, and this reflux can cause VCD attacks. And, "...the deposition of inhaled medications and corticosteroids on the vocal cords may contribute to upper airway irritability"--meaning, making it more likely for VCD attacks to happen. These asthma medications can cause or worsen VCD, in both asthmatics, & in people who were MISdiagnosed, who don't have asthma at all! (Ref.4, 5,17,22)
-
- ASTHMA MEDS (continued): Oral STEROIDS (for asthma &/or for other conditions), can irritate the stomach, causing worse GASTRIC REFLUX, leading to more VCD and ironically, to worse asthma.
-
- ASTHMA MEDS (continued): Systemic STEROIDS (for asthma &/or for other conditions), can cause tracheal collapse, causing TRACHEAL STENOSIS (a type of subglottic stenosis). Subglottic means below vocal cord level. Stenosis means narrowing of the space within. Tracheal collapse, tracheal stenosis, & other kinds of subglottic stenosis, can cause VCD. (Ref. 17--2003 VCD Conference, and see webpage 3).

Yeah, I remember her saying it used to be an old chicken house or poultry shelter or something? Get her outta there, KRS! Damn, mold can make you really, really sick. Have you been looking into bringing suit against the company she works for? Are other employees getting sick, too? Call the EPA and have them check out that building! |

Having worked in the medical profession for several years now, I couldn't agree with you more.
I cannot begin to tell you guys how thrilled I am that ya'll have a true diagnosis and that you have finally found healthcare providers that don't have their heads firmly inserted up their asses!
Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year all rolled into one!!!
Thank you so much for keeping us posted on all of this. Seriously, your story is a great example of how to persevere in a medical system that is more about business than about healing.

FUCKER.
Your celebration on FB nearly made my poor brother throw up.
I'm reading every post with gratitude and a huge smile. I love you guys! I can't tell you what a relief it is to know what the fuck is wrong. And NBJ is right - you have to advocate for yourself, even when they're making you feel like you're just a hysteric. FUCK THAT. If you feel something is wrong, don't let doctors or anyone else shut you up. If I had let them just send me home, I would have continued taking the medications that were making me worse, and I'd have never known there was a weird sideways vulva in my throat.
